sti or wrx
hi all,
well i now have the funds to purchase my first scooby about 7k ish, just wondering whether to go for a newer say 2005 wrx with sti looks or an older 2002 bug STI. seen a couple i like just dont know what to go for.
What are the main differences?
any help would be much appreciated, thank you

i was faced with same problem 3 years ago could afford bug sti or blob wrx. I test drove both and ended up with blob wrx. Added a few sti bits and was happy. But the urge for an sti came back and have now bought a jdm sti. Depends what you want from the car nothing wrong with a wrx and with a few mods can get to sti performance. Insurance can be cheaper dependant on your age and a wrx is defo cheaper to run and buy spares for. But at the end of the day if you want an sti and settle for a wrx you will end up changing. But i just like the look of the blob and bought the best i could afford. Difficult choice really. You need to have a test drive of both as wrx is easier to live with.

thats my fear, should i go for the newer wrx but then in the bk of mind keep thinking i should have gone for the bug sti, because of the extra performance. i have loved the cars since forever, think i slightly like the looks of the blob over the bug, but i like to get the best possible choice for my money. if the performance is not that much greater than the sti, that would sway me to the wrx for the newer 2005 shape with lower running cost. eeek i dont know so many choices

Ive had both starting with a cheap uk turbo and decided it wasnt worth spending money on to get more from it so instead saved up for a blob sti and its brilliant, so glad I got it rather than a wrx as you would spend loads getting it to sti power and braking ability. For 7k you could get a blob with a few miles on it which as long as its been serviced and looked after shouldnt be to much of a problem. Mines got 70k on it know and runs great but I make sure its looked after. End of the day you need to see what you you'd be happy with.

I bought a WRX 4 yrs ago and modded it (didn't plan t). Have sometimes thought it would have made more sense to get the STi in the first place. Compared to std WRX, different turbo and more power, better gearbox (6 speed & stronger), better supension. They do have gold wheels and a silly spoiler though.
Best to try em both if you can. I'd suggest the STi if you can afford a decent one though - that's what I'll buy next.

Mate i have recently upgraded from a 2000 turbo to a Hawkeye STI. And it is miles different forgeting the age ax i looked at WRX's and the STI is just so much sharper and edgier than a WRX. But totally depends on if you want a sallon car with some go and comfort. Or and a out and out performance saloon.
As they say the choice is yours.....

the real hard thing for me is the price difference between just the 2002 bug sti to the 2003 blob otherwise i would have gone for the blob sti. So i started looking a modded wrx's to try and get best of both worlds. But i still think i will regret not getting a sti, I could stretch my budget to 7500 but thats all i got!

I initially bought a bug eye WRX and was happy until I drove a hawkeye STI. From then on I didn't look at my WRX the same way. It just felt like a different car.
I had even stared modding it but sold it and waited till I could afford a blob eye STI PPP. Happy as a pig in doo doo now.
Go for a bug STI instead of a blob/hawk WRX. Find a good un you'll never look back.

I drove a 2005 WRX last year on 1 of those Impreza track days advertised on this site. Having driven my 340bhp Sti to the track and then driving the WRX(225 bhp) on a few laps around the track, I have to say that I thought the WRX was gutless in comparison. Just my opinion all you WRX drivers out there.

Have a look at this one

Should find plenty blob stis for £7500

well what im thinking of doing is when i make a move on the one i like is to find the nearest subaru dealer to him/her and get them to take it there on my expense on the condition if they deem it in good condition i will buy it. does that sound fair?

your best bet is to proberly get someone who is qualified to go with you because if you go to buy a car private maybe the seller may not want to comply with your wishes to drive to a subaru dealer for a engineer to give the car the once over,so to make the situation go more smoother best to get someone who knows to go with you,if you are going to get one from a dealer in a ideal world the car should be checked out already with a good warantee, but always go over any car your going to see with a fine tooth comb check service history stamps, service intervals, what fuel its been run on etc etc etc ...because remember your not just checking out the car but also the previous owner.

https://www.scoobynet.com/private-fo...k-stunner.html i really like the look of this car its stuuning, talked to the guy who owns it and is happy for any inspection he says! but he does say he gets a knocking from time to time from his bc coilovers however this is a common trait! is this true?

the car looks lovely mate a nice colour to,regarding the bc coilovers i have them on my sti and have never had a problem with them, but alot of complaints was made about them, knocking noises and klunks, which bc investigated the problem and found that there rear top mounts where not as compliant as the standard sti topmounts so they brought out a more compliant rubber for them which comes as standard know on all there bc coilovers unless you specify amore solid top mount, but it is a easy fix.so the guy selling this one must of had a set from the early batch.but they are still a brilliant suspension set up,much better ride and drive then the sti shocks and springs.

recon i will ring the guy see what he thinks to taking it to a subaru garage if i pay, and all being well make him an offer on it. So i gotta look into insurance now, is it worth trying the specialist insurance companies or stay with current run of the mill ones? and thank you ever so much for the advice and help everyone has given me hopefully i will be looking to join a owners club very soon
#25
If the car has been modified in any way ( BC coilovers) then the "run of the mill" insurers won't touch it. Try "A-Plan", "Keith Michaels" or any of the other specialist insurers. Have a look at the Insurance forum on this site. A-Plan did me a very good deal on mine.
