Default Wheel spacers ****** Do I ****** Dont I ******

I have recently bought Rota Force Drift 18x8.5 et48.

I want to buy some extended wheel arches for my bugeye wagon, and i have been advised i need to buy some 30mm ish wheel spacers, or change my alloys to an offset like et10 ish.

Can all you knowledgeable people out there please advise me.

Thx,

Richard.

I've got some 20mm spacers on order from CDF

Been told I'll lose some steering feel and the bearings will take more of a beating...but I do not do track days so it's a trade off for the look I'm wanting,

Spacers are another thing to brake/go wrong and serve no purpose other than cosmetic.

If you don't mind yer wheel coming off on the motorway then use 'em.

A nice sweeping statement.

If spacers were "unsafe"

a: People like Eibach, H&R & Ichiba wouldn't sell them
b: Rally cross and autocross also guys wouldn't use them

They are less safe than not having them.

I know you can probably do then so they are no much more of a risk but it's still safer not to have them. Slip on spacers are a definately stupid idea.

yes, the 5mm and 10mm "cheap" spacers where the studs are shortened are a compromise in strength I agree.

The OP is asking about using 30mm spacers though, which are totally different

Well I agree that the bolt on ones are better and I wouldn't say they were 'dangerous' just I'd be more comfortable in a car doing 100 mph down the motorway w/out spacers basically.

It's just a poor engineering solution basically. Now you have more bolts/nuts to loosen and/or fatigue. Better to get the proper offset wheels.

I have in the past used specers (on a much heavier car) with no problems. However if you can over come the problem by changing the wheel and off set then that will always be my choice.

There are 2 types of spacers, 1 type you bolt to the hub, then the wheel to the spacer, these are steel and heavier, plus you have a extra 4 bolts on each wheel.

And the ones where you have extended wheel bolts and bolt through the wheel and spacer straight into the hub, these can be had in aluminium and effect the unsprung weight less.

I always used the ali ones All IMHO

Thx guys, After spending almost £7.5K on this car, i am in no hurry to spend another 1.5k on wheels and tyres. Also to get the correct offset, i would probably need to change my hubs, driveshafts, etc. Because they don't make a wide range of wheel in 5x100. So meeee thinks i will go down the spacer route, oh and to say that my wheels are going to fall off is a little strong dude. Take a day off fella !!!!!!!

Thx,

Richard.

Not all together true now. I used to use spacers on my mini 1275 Gt, and it made a hell of a lot of difference in the handling. I think spacers have came along way in safety. And the hub centric ones that eibach do, look fantastic. IMO

I thought that they improved grip as there is a wider track, which can only be a good thing.

Hubcentric is the way to go if possible.

I ran spacers on my wide arch classic with no issue, although i did fit longer wheel studs.
90k miles on the wheel bearings when i added the spacers, and i probably did another 20k on them before i got rid of the car, no issues.

Car felt a lot more planted due to the wider track, although it was a lot more prone to tramlining.

Sometimes people just talk absolute ****, for the sake of speaking.
Shut up

Yep Seconded on that. Got some Hubcentric H&R Spacers for my other car (YRV Turbo) as the rear tyres were flush against the rear axle (Aftermarket Wolfrace alloys) Ended up buying 5MM ones and even with the 5MM ones you got extended bolts to fit to the car. Tried the spacers without the extended bolts to start with, and found the nuts would only tighten so far. And was worrying everytime I drove the car if the nuts would come loose and the wheels flying off.
