Default Another What-oil Thread

Okay, I'm due an oil change and the plan is a good 10w-40 fully synth on my mildly modded Bug WRX. Happy with the oil change dance, need for a new filter pre-filled yada yada.

What I want to know is at what stage of modding should I consider moving to 10w-50?

I'm currently running about 270-280bhp with a FMIC, decat, 3" exhaust, remap etc. Next stage is the larger turbo, pinks, TGV delete. Is it time now for a different grade of oil or should I stick with the standard grade until stage 2

Cheers guys

Jon

I still run a 5w40 fully synth on my car, even when i get around to the 360bhp stage it will be running that same oil, if I went to 400bhp then I would go for something like a 50 rated one

I've been told / led to understand that a thicker oil such as 10-50 is better if you go on track days etc. I use silkolene pro s 10-50 in mine, circa 330 bhp mainly a weekend / track car and it runs lovely.

And then just to complicate the matter Opie recommends 5w-30 for a 2001 WRX and STI

strange that, as its not the best grade of oil for a subaru.

New age cars can use a 5w30 fully synthetic oil, though personally I wouldnt use it.
