Default Gearbox oil - something not right?

Decided to change the gearbox oil on my 2005 wrx, dropped and refilled with 3.5litres as stated in the manual. Now whats confusing is the oil level on the dipstick is well over the full mark so looked at how much drained out and that was 2.5litre (must admit didnt check it first before draining)

Car was on level ground throughout.

Any thoughts anyone?

Cheers

If it was the 6 speed STi I would have told you to drain from BOTH plugs but the 5 speed has one.
