I would say that it is that - has the CEL light come on anf off now and again - as you described was the same as my 99 plate a few years ago.

What makes you suspect the lambda sensor is at fault, are you getting cel? im pretty sure you can monitor the lambda sensor voltage using ecu explorer. I also have a MY00 and had similar problems recently turned out to be the maf. They are very fragile on MY99/00 cars.

CEL means check engine light, again you can check the maf on ecu explorer although if its an intermitant fault that wont be much help, check for any stored fault codes.

I wouldnt jump the gun if i were you, in my opinion its best the to pin point whats wrong with the car and then replace the offending part rather than throwing random parts at it. If you dont feel competent take the car to someone who knows what there doing. You could replace the maf and lambda and still have the same problem otherwise.

Id fit an oe maf, I have heard of people fitting universal o2sensors without having any problems although personally id get an oe lambda. For safety's sake id take it easy until you get it checked, a failing maf could cause the engine to run lean and go bang!! Hope you get the problem resolved soon ( OE being original Subaru parts)
