I would be much more tempted to just keep the original air box and fit a good quality panel filter. Induction kits can play havoc with the my99-00 cars due to the weak MAF, but this isn't to say they wouldn't on other aged Imprezas aswell.
Unless you're going front mount with your intercooler, I doubt it would make much difference aside from emptying your wallet
