Best for silver paint?
I use meguiars wax stuff (red bottle that smells lush) after I wash it... comes up nice but wondering:
a) what other products can produce good shine and
b) is it ok to use old clean rags to wipe off excess wax?

I use meguires, stages 2 and 3 and i can say as someone in the motor trade, the finish is one of the best i have found (bar claying) You can use clean SOFT fibre rags yes. However i suggest using a nice quality microfiber cloth at the end of each stage (taking off the applied wax)
Others are far more **** than me so they will be able to comment in more detail.

On a silver car, the Werksatt acrylic kit really brings out the flake in the metallic. It really brings the paint alive.
Available from Polished Bliss.
In a nutshell, a decent finish comes from good preparation and using the right tool for the job.
Using any old cloth can marr the paintwork , leaving scratches.
A microfibre cloth ( 5 for £2 at Tesco for example ) will reduce the potential for causing swirls.

on my premium silver hawk. i, every couple of months, find that my best finish is achieved by using meguiars stage 1 paint prep, then a good coating of auto glym hi def wax, then finally a good coating of turtle wax ice liquid polish. stays good for about 10 days (longer if nice weather) then wash and use meguiars quick wax spray ( not sure of exact name but its in a purple squirty bottle) and then meguiars detailer spray. as said though a good claying first makes things even better but not too often as its just pointless, say 3 times a year imo is fine.
