Post low fuel light

Slightly weird one this morning, Fuel gauge is a needle's thickness above the E, then the low fuel light comes on, so gets to the 1st shell and they are out of fuel !!, poodle to the next one and fills the tank to the brim (visable in the neck) and it took 46 litres thats the weird bit the last time the fuel light came on it took about 55 litres (my00 = 60 l tank), so at least it was "only" £60 rather than £80 this morning.
ps I'm not in the habit of letting the light come on. only 3rd time in 10 years!

pps £1.289 / litre v power, brompton rd south ken.
