Default Questions about vf37 or vf43 on UK STI

I'm looking for more power from my 2005 STI.

Only think I'm not sure about is what turbo to get.

The vf37 seems like a a good turbo but I'm not looking to go equal length manifold, could i not just change the up-pipe and down-pipe flanges?
Could someone also please explain to me why the sump needs to be changed?

I was also looking at the vf43, would this be very laggy on the 2.0L and what is this turbo capable of making (assuming all supporting mods are in place)?

I'm looking for circa 400bhp. Currently running 325bhp with filter, full 3" system and ECU TEK Map.
Car will have level 7 plugs, 650cc injectors, Turbo (???), fuel pump and ported manifold. Will also wrap the exhaust and manifold.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Give Duncan a call, dynamix on here. Yesterday he mapped mine with a vf48 from the new hatch on UK blob. I will be getting it on a rolling road soon but estimates are around 400 and much improved all round. I decatted at the same time so this along with the map probably helped with the lack of lag compared to previous. If you haven't already got a upgraded fuel pump, I would get one. I haven't heard of anyone getting 400 from a vf43 but I stand to be corrected.

The VF 37 is twin scroll, you will need to change a fair bit to get it running on your car as yours is a single scroll setup.
The downpipes on twin scrolls and manifolds are different, so the sump has to be different, hence why you have to change the lot.

How about the MD 321 series ? Doesn't the H version do up to about 420 with mods ??

lateral Performance has a web page on them in the OEM position AFAIK

Thanks for the reply

Brownface - What other parts have you got other than decat system, map n turbo?

MIdlife - I have seen the MD321's they are great bits of kit, if I have to use one I will but I wanted to see what I could do with the VF turbos first as they would save me a fair bit of money.

Tony - Is what your saying is the equal length manifold gets in the way of the sump and thats why it has to change?
If thats the case then I can't see why you couldn't use the same exhuast parts and just cut the signle scroll flanges off and weld on twin scroll ones.
I'm not interested in loosing the scooby sound, it's half the reason I love em so much & not when 400 is easily achiveable on un-equal.

I have just got as you say decat, turbo (48), 650 injectors, fuel pump and dynamix remap. As mentioned the md321t would have been my first choice (see JGM's daily driver ) but right now I am loving it so much I've got no regrets. Twin scrolls sound awesome, but aren't cheap for us fools with type UK's

Hi Chris

If you are looking for 400bhp neither a VF37 nor a VF43 will get you there.

You are into the specialist turbo arena and it really depends then on budget and how far past 400 you want to go...

To gtee 400+ an MD321T would be my first choice - even on a 2 litre it makes for a very lively drive and will hit the figures time and again.

Lots of other options though.

A (good) FMIC will be a definite benefit for you at that level.

The std ecu can do that power level but you will probably hit the limit of the maf housing at around 420bhp so thinking of a larger diameter cold air induction kit or aftermarket ecu such as syvecs or simtek.

Alternatively, put an 18g on there or one of the new SC36 Billet turbos and get 360 ish and a quick road car for a lot less money without knocking on the door of the limits of the engine.
