STI Type UK has 3 CAT's?
Is this true, one in the downpipe, a smaller one and the main one (3 in total) and removing the main CAT and replacing it with a decat will still allow it to pass an MOT emissions test?

No, one in the downpipe, one in the centre section, WRX's (2ltr) have 3, JDM's have 1.
Depending which cat you remove you may also have to remap the car, they can be a little tempremental

So it needs the main CAT only to pass the emissions test and the one in the downpipe wont pass it on its own hence get it replaced with a straight through downpipe?

Well it may still pass, just depends on the sensors etc, if your o2 sensor is knackered for instance, it wont matter how many cats you have but they should pass with 1 if they are running ok.
Have you given up on the JDM idea?

if the cat is nice and hot and the car is well mantained and in good order then yes it is possible it will pass with just the downpipe cat in place> mine has been ok but the cat is only fitted come mot time

Thanks all.
Yes Tony, think i'll give it a miss, seems it needs a few bits doing tbh (spoke to previous owner who actually works for the same company as me...small world!).
I'm looking at a couple of Type UK STi's, 06 plate for £12500 and a 57 plate at a main dealer for £15500.
Its just the guy with the 06 plate said he had a decat on and it passed the MOT because it has 2 other CATs on the system....if thats not the case he must of scraped through with the downpipe CAT only as he said he didnt put his CAT back on.
Oh and is a TSL exhaust supposed to be half decent?

Not STI's, the older wrx's did have the one in the up pipe, those were the ones that use to shatter and blow the turbo but otherwise the STI's have 2, down pipe and centre section.
Yep that pic is of a wrx exhaust (note the twin pea shooter tail pipe )

Can someone explain the sections of the exhaust from turbo back, i thought there was only 4 parts? And where an "up pipe" fits in?!
Downpipe (with CAT)
CAT itself
Centre section with silencer
Backbox
Also does the Hawkeye WRX have 2 CATs then, previous to this the WRX had 3?
