Halfords 5W - 50 Fully Synthetic
Hi all quick replies needed if possible:
Need to do an oil change today as have some long drives planned and can't order or pick-up oil from anywhere other than Halfords locally.
I'd like to know people's thoughts on Halford 5W-50 Fully Synthetic Oil?
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165581
The car is an '05 WRX running 360/350....
Thanks in advance!

I would avoid that tbh, surely you must have a car spares shop nearby that stock Millers oil at a minimum?? or a scooby specialist with silkoline pro s 10-50?
I've searched around - to no avail. I know of one Supposed specialist Subaru garage, but I wouldn't let them supply me with oil, let alone any work on the car.
Any reasons why you would avoid the Halfords stuff? - I think its manufactured by Lucas oils...

LOL @ Oil Snobbery...
If I could I would purchase some Millers/Silkolene.
I am going to give the Halfords 5W50, it has a picture of a Classic Impreza on it
It states its use if for Track days and "enthusiastic driving" -

I think its under rated because its cheaper than all the other brands & it has the halfords brand on it. I normally use 15w 50 Mobil or Motul & i would not hesistate using the 5w 50 at all.
have been looking into this halfords stuff and its manufactured by comma, just got a cracking deal on some on eBay for £25 delivered, this is the comma branded stuff not the halfords , same oil bar the container
COMMA Oil is fine
HALFORDS Oil is fine
Lot of utter tosh spoken on here about expesive oils ... they are expensive because the simple buy them - not because they are better than the cheaper brands! As said above - Oil Snobbery ....... snobbery costs money!
The issue I would have is the 5W is too thin when cold .... and 50 is treacle when hot, hence sapping power.
Stick with 10W-40.

Look out - troll alert!!
Having read a number of reviews on things like Halfords screenwashes and other products, it usually comes out that their advanced stuff is middle of the road, and their basic stuff is crap and therefore cheap for a reason.
I spent £58 on Millers oil and a OEM Subaru filter and sump crush ring from Scoobyparts because I know it will be good and I don't have to worry about it.
Save money if you want, it might not be terrible. I'd rather play it safe and not take the chance.
[EDIT]
Oh and having re-read this and noticed the figures you're running on a WRX - using Halfords oil - probably not the best of ideas..
On those figures people on my oil change thread were saying Millers or Silkolene 10w50 or 10w60 mate.[/EDIT]

Saying that they usually have an offer on where 4 litres of 10w 40 semi synth mobil oil is cheaper at £20 than their own branded stuff at £25. Go figure
I was told years ago fully synthetic was too thin and stick to semi synthetic. Fully synthetic gets past the rings. This seems to be verified by the fact that I had very little oil consumption with semi synthetic and a lot more with fully synthetic. I've heard magnatex is very good but I've used Halfords semi synthetic with no issues, normally 10w 40 in cars and high performance bikes. If you are really worried just do more frequent oil changes.

Any 'type' of oil could be too thin or too thick. You really need to look at it's properties - 0/50, 5/40, 10/40, 15/30 etc etc as a minimum. Then select the correct one for your car and it's usage. I expect Halfords oil is adaquate, but a lot of people prefer to use a higher quality oil.
halfords 5w50 is i believe made by comma, there is nothing wrong with halfords own brand oil look at its api and acea spec, thats the important thing to be looking at when selecting a oil for ur car, imo its as good as any of the top brands, and like always with a subaru engine is oil changes some specialist say every 3k, im useing mobile 1 15w50 in my classic sti at the moment and i change my about every 5k and thats driving it hard, you also get a free 8 peice screw driver set when u buy halfords fully syt oil atm too.
Do you really understand what you've just said?

i use an ester based oil as my main concern is shearing down, sure you may use halfords 5w50, but how long before it becomes a 30 or even 20 weight? Millers cfs for me, £50 a gallon, saving £35 on a gallon of oil is a bit short sighted imo.
