Default UK v Jap import

Firstly, Hello to everyone! First post here so be gentle with me!
New to the Subaru world having just sold my Civic type S.
Still want performance but need something bigger and 4wd so thought an Impreza Wagon fitted the bill.
Can of worms well and truly opened!
Basically, I've read the 'buyers guide' links on here (which were great) but what I'm trying to find out is if there is a downside to buying imported?
I've got £2.5k to spend wich is taking me down the 'Classic' route, which is fine, and I'm either coming up with W plate 2.0 sports (non-turbo) UK models or N plate'ish WRX imports.
Insurance is ok as I'm an old git!
Is there any difference in build quality or parts? I understand the imports need to be chipped for UK fuel? Is this correct? Any other specifics for imports that need to be viewed?
Any advice, knowledge or opinions would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance.
