Default Turbo 2000 vs Type R

Hello there,

I'm quite intrigued by the type-r, almost to the point of selling the turbo 2000 and buying a type-r. At the moment I have a completely standard turbo 2000.

I'm wondering if there is a huge difference in the way it handles and accelerates? I've tried looking for specs for both cars to compare side-to-side, but I keep finding such varying statistics for the same cars.

From what I understand, my 99 turbo has either 215 or 218bhp? and weighs 1220kg? and a v5 type-r 280bhp? weighing 1100kg?

does anyone have any accurate performance figures?

I think just by looking at the power to weight figures, surely the type-r must feel MUCH quicker than the turbo 2000 or is this not the case?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated!

The Type R will feel quicker and will handle better, that's for sure. The V5 Type R will be at least 1250-1270KG though.

The standard version 5 Type R suspension is a little lower and a fair bit stiffer than the UK counterpart. The main handling differences result from mechanical changes - the plated rear and driver controlled centre diff on the Type R. This makes for much livelier handling under power.

Acceleration on the JDM car is sharper both due to the increased power output and the revvier engine, but most importantly by the much lower gear ratios. This improves acceleration but the downside, if you spend a lot of time on the motorway, is that fifth on a Type R gearbox is more or less the same ratio as fourth on a UK one.

From what I understand, my 99 turbo has either 215 or 218bhp? and weighs 1220kg? and a v5 type-r 280bhp? weighing 1100kg?
That's not quite correct. The standard Type R's are more or less the same weight as a UK car, only a handful of kilograms difference. You might even find a Type R - especially with aircon - ends up a tiny bit heavier than its UK equivalent.

I'd had a good search beforehand, but couldn't find much about the step up from a standard turbo to say an sti/type-r/p1 etc. but I've read a lot of the posts about type r's. I'm becoming more tempted as the days go on!

Apart from the acceleration the main thing I noticed was the way it felt round the bends, the type r just seems to dig its heels in and hang on much better than a uk car.

The whole package just feels sharper and more agile though, the gearing can be annoying when you've been used to a UK car. Acceleration is a lot keener when you change up a gear as the ratios are closer and shorter, the gearstick throw is also physically shorter.

Thanks very much for the info! Acceleration is the thing i love the most, so any improvement from the standard would be great! I'm looking to spend around £6.5-7k on one, and from what i've seen i can probably get a nice example for this amount!

Are the Type R's really that much better the a p1??? And why as from a speed point of view not much in it, but the p1 must be better to live with having longer 5th.

i'm almost definitely convinced now, however I don't think the shorter 5th gear will be much of an issue, as I don't really do any prolonged motorway driving.

If it is an issue, you can get a V-Ltd with a longer 5th.

Drive mine near enough everyday.
Full exhaust, decat, remap etc & a set of decent brakes. Then ya got yourself a 330bhp road going rally car! Literally lol!

I was told it was a option on the v-ltd with the longer 5th..
With regards to the P1 vs Type r debarte their are pros and cons for both, type r is more of a track car/drivers car than a P1..
Get a type-r mate you will never look back!

Yes believe the longer 5th was an option from the factory personally the turbo 2000 and type R are just totally different machines, the type R is a more manic monster where as the turbo 2000 is a more sedate everyday car, the turbo 2000 is probably slightly lighter though due to not having air con as standard but the dccd and shorter ratio's make up for this in the type r (and the extra 61bhp helps too )

Shorter gearing = worse fuel consumption, and it's not THAT good in a Turbo 2000
