Sell my Scooby For a Sierra??
Hi, Ive got a 2001 classic Subaru sport with a full WRX STi kit on it, been looking around on the web and spotted a 1992 Ford Sierra with a cossy 2.9 24v v6 engine ... Im only 19 and my insurance for the Subaru is jus under £1000, The Sierra comes in around the same (Reg as a 1800) ... Would it be worth selling the Subaru for the Sierra? Ive still got a Year and a bit till Im 21 so Ive no chance of a proper WRX untill at least then? Thoughts appriciated guys .. Cheers!!

Sierra with a Scorpio 24v lump?
interesting... does the gearing work?
What was the base Sierra? You need to check the breaks etc are up to the extra power

Based on an 1800 Saph .. I know people say I wouldnt do it as Insurance would be void etc .. But I must admit I am seriously tempted .. Brakes etc all off a Sierra Cosworth so yes they would be able to handle the power! Just really looking for something quicker to be honest and I dont have the money to get a conversion done on my sport!! Looks the part too!

Hi mate - leave the Sierra
if you want more punch for your £$
get a Saab turbo
either 9-3 185bhp or 9-3 Aero (210bhp)
or even a 9-5 aero 230bhp
should be a newer car for your money - better reliability and cheaper insurance (dont let the old man image put you off - they are quicker than alot of performance cars (especially through the gears once rolling)

I can think of a 100 cars for a 19 year old to own and niether of those are in the list The birds would run a mile.
If you want more poke forget the sierra with void insurance, buy yourself a hot hatch.

Not just engine transplant, cossie brakes count as a modification. How about starlet gt turbo or charade gtti (if you canfind a decentone) or Suzuki swift gti. At your age you want to declare all mods and build up your no claims. If you're not declaring mods and have an accident you're in the ****. All details will be logged and any future quotes will be considerably higher.

You can get insurance on a Subaru at any age, depends how much your willing to pay for one, either that or run the risk regarding an unregistered engine conversion.
Had my first WRX import at 19, had a V3 sti at 20 and I'm on a Type R at 21 now. So it can be done, at 21 with 3 yrs ncb, 2 years in subaru's my insurance is £1600 fully comp. Still alot, but for the car and my age it's nothing.

Hello mate, the insurance for the Type R is with admrial. Got a quote online for £2042 so we rang them up and after 30mins we had it down to £1600.
I paid £2500 at 19, but after a year in a car that's classed as 'high performance' it reduced to £1500 so I upgraded to the V3 at this point.
Multi car is a good way forward with admrial at a young age, may be worth trying your luck?
Glanza's are good cars, was looking at them myself when my V3's engine went last year. Also had a VTR and agree wouldn't go back to something French!
Regards
Jamie

Gooch whatever you do stay legal insurance wise cause you'll hurt yourself & others if anything went wrong which is TBH more likely at your age IMO.
What about a (89-96 best years to go for) Toyota Starlet GT Turbo? they can be tuned up quite nicely & insurance isn't that high on them. Goodluck with the hunt

I know its tempting, wait a few years, I got my first scooby at 28, as the insurance was a joke - its worth it

all depends on your buget really..................
you could go a little earlier (years wise and retro which is becoming quite cool at the moment) how about a well sorted mk2 escort? mexico or an rs2000 if you can find one
low classic insurance no road tax and bags of tail out fun

I agree with tweaks, the civic vti is great fun and a very quick little car for a 1.6. You say you want something with a bit more grunt? Why not try insurance on a prelude 2.2 vtec. They go well and with a few mods you will be well above 200bhp. Saying that tho, with a 4 branch, good induction kit, set of teg type r cams the civic vti can be pulled close to 200bhp aswell.

The Sierra is a definate NO - not only will the Insurance be voided, you will be blacklisted by the Insurance Industry and never touched again ..... you wouldn't be able to get cover on a Dinky Toy!!
Wait awhile and stay the right side of the Insurance (I assume yours knows that your Sport is done up like a STi?) I hope so!!
2 years will go so quickly ... save your pennies and have something to look forward to ..

i built a 2.9 cossie saph a few years ago, changed the logbook to the new engine, made it a complete cossie rep down to the carpet inside, all mods declared and it increased my premium by £80 per year! as they were only interested in the power increase percentage from standard (it started as a 2.0 twin cam on a carb). i was 24 at the time, fantastic car with the right gearbox but its expensive to make them go faster.
