Default windscreen.

anyone had a new windscreen fitted? a bloody stone has chipped mine, national windscreens said it was unrepairable,so im having a new screen put in on monday.anyone had any bad experiences eg leaks etc? little bit concerned about it as my old man had a new screen fitted to his shogun and it leaked its *** off, they blamed it on the seal(which looked fine btw).so am i worrying for nothing or should i be concerned?

I had a nightmare with RAC windscreens.

Long story but it took 6 attempts of missed appointments, wrong glass, missing parts (no new rubber trim)!

Finally got an original Subaru windscreen fitted rather than RAC's own make.

No problems once it was finally fitted.

I've had 3 new screens in the last 2 years

All been done by Autoglass. Been impressed with them generally. Phone calls to let me know when they are coming and again when they were 10 minutes away.

Never had any leak problems. Just wish I could dodge flying stones easier

When the RAC man came without one, he said that he could use the old one but he couldn't guarantee it to be water tight. He recommended a new one, so I waited.

Yes, get a new seal.

My last one was a 'mare, fitted, drove off in it, after a few miles thought I was suffering vision problems as my peripheral vision seemed to be wavering

Parked up, inspected it carefully, I could see vertical lines inside it all over the passenger side.
Went back, they could see them too, they were annoyed with the suppliers, new one fitted, it leaked, THAT had to go back for a refit.

It SEEMS to be OK now.........

Top trim should be replaced on the classic as the plastic trims break when you remove it from the old screen. Check all the clips on the side trims are ok otherwise these may come loose. Windscreens do not leak because of a loose trim, they are glued in so if the glue line is poor then the screen will not bond properly.

You should always demand that they fit an original Subaru windscreen with a new seal. As far as I'm concerned this is a standard fitment for me and I would not settle for any less. Neither should you.

just spoke to national windscreens and they have said that a "trim kit" has been ordered and that they use pilkington glass which is just as good as dealer part and is exactly the same.by "trim kit" i assume this means new seal??? should i put my mind at rest or should i be concerned??

Some insurance companies will not pay for genuine glass because of the price difference between genuine and copy parts. The amount of customers that want genuine parts has increased over the last few years but they have had to get authorization from there insurance company that they will pay for it before we do any work on there car.

Why don,t you ask the fitter what cars they have done before/what experience they have? I have a small folder with proof of the cars i have done, always good to show customers if they have any worries.

I had an RAC windscreen fitted in the Chelmsford depot 3 years ago to my mint 2003sti, top job and they fitted all new trim and still no issues at all. In fact the RAC screen came with a handy shaded section (like my old focus) at the top so better than the subaru genuine one imho.

The genuine Subaru glass has that now too. Got it on my replacement Subaru one (MY03 STi).

I had one done by national and it was w*nk. I suppose every firm must have at least one useless fitter. All you can do is carefully check it and if your not happy play f*ck about it.

One of mine has an RAC screen and seems ok.

One thing to look at if you are having a replacement screen. Is there any rust visible below the top trim? If so would be best to get it to a body shop. Have the old screen removed at insurers expense, have the rust treated at your expense and finally have the insurance pay for the fittng of the new screen. As said before the top trim is not a seal. The glass is bonded to the shell. If there is any rust then the new screen may leak, and the rust will eventually come out from behind the trim onto the roof. Wifes roof is being resprayed as I type.

Just a thought.

well.....its all been done and looks spot on,the fitter seemed good and didnt take too long, its a very tidy job and im happy with it......but i havent drove it yet and wont be till 2morrow,oh and i will also be pouring buckets of water over it aswelli paid via cheque so if it does leak ill cancel it but i have to admit all looks very good and im pretty confident its not going to leak, they supplied new trim and clips etc so fingers crossed i wont have to cancel the cheque. the fitter had previously done scoobys aswell so hopefully that will be a bonus.will be posting back in a couple days to give final result. so far so good.
