Depends on what spec you want to put it back to and what went on it in the first place.

give a few of the tuners on here a call me perosnaly i would pop david at API a call run it over with him. if you start looking to rebuild the 2.0ltr to run bigger power then most would suggest popping in a 2.5ltr for the extra low down grunt and more tourqe but that depends on yor personal taste and driving style

give a few of the tuners a call and they will point you in the right direction

I think it's a rebore of the 2-litre.

DO talk to David at API, he's an acknowledged expert, and honest too.

Be careful if you go for more power/torque, the classic box won't take a LOT of torque.
I've gone for a 2.5 bottom end, but have also opted for a 6-speed box.

2.33 is the most expensive of the Subaru engine sizes to make. It starts with a log forgotten EJ22 solid deck Turbo block. Current new price - IF you can find one - is over £3000 for just the bare block.

Occasionally there are good used blocks around but they need a deal of machining anyway to create the right shape size for 2.33

2.1 works well and is relatively cheap to.

2.5 is similarly priced but the torque it generates will bust the gearbox.

Call me to talk the options through if you wish - no obligation.

I cant really see the point of that myself. I think the cost of a rebuild is going to be near enough the same whether it breaks or not, so you'd be aswell leaving it and see. It might last tens of thousands of miles yet.

Do you know for sure it hasn't had a previous rebuild?

No one I actually had a rebuild on my old STi V back in early 2000's & it was over £3k then! Doubt they've gone down in price ...

£1500 will be absolute minimum, will exclude parts and probably from someone who doesn't rebuild them very often. The crank alone will set you back £400! I think API standard rebuilds are around the 3-4k mark plus vat. The engine maybe solid for many years to come but on a classic, that is almost the value of the car itself!
This is the only thing putting me off returning to the scooby owners club as I got bitten last time and I am still paying for it now!

Full rebuild back to day one, zero miles, original Subaru spec, STi 5 at APi is £2400.00 + VAT [ £ 2820.00 inc ]

two eight two O - That's a hoot

Since you ask.

BUT places like SMR will offer one at about 800...... Go look on the forums for their feedback and compare it to ours.

Chris, the STi 5 / 6 P1 engine build price was and always was £2500.00 + VAT [ £2937.50 inc ] Add in fitting at £550.00 + VAT [ £646.25.00 inc ]

Add in perhaps, a recovery cost, a clutch and light flywheel and ported headers and
4 g's soon comes up.

But an STi 5 / 6 / P1 has never cost more than £2500 + VAT for a standard build.

We're working on an engine that fits itself It is proving a little tricky, but we reckon it'll be a winner.

2.33, widely regarded as "the daddy" for big power builds is usually built using a EJ22t (2.2ltr) and stroked to 2.33/5. As these are quite rare now, 2ltr blocks can be linered as an alternative.

Original 2.33 EJ22T built blocks are still available, you just have to look in the right places

Easy with the sarcasm there David! I see your point but when I ask a garage for a rebuild price, I want a 'final' price that includes removal and fitting. Also, when people mention prices on here, I would imagine that most quoted include the removal and fitting service.
For me, it wouldn't be £2900 for a rebuild, it would be £3600.

Sure Chris, l understand, but the OP asked for an engine, not a fitted engine.

No sarcasm intended, just seemed funny at the time; apologies.

I'm guessing you want a bare EJ22t in which case I couldn't help you.

2.1 stroker all the way for me. Very good option for the cash.

The problem is where do you draw the line.

Oh look more cc, I'll have a turbo to go with that before my re-map...... oh dear, all this power I need bigger brakes, now I need a 6 box.....................

If I have a 6-speed I can go for a bigger turbo, now I need to upgrade the fuel system, swirl pot.... baffled sump............... And then you stop and realise how much you have spent.

Or is that just me LOL
