Just bought a MY98 Will i get piston slap?
#1
After deliberating over a 39k MY99 and a November 98 car with only 21k iam now reading alot about piston slap. Can some one put my fears at rest.
Is this covered by warranty(purchased car from a subaru garage)?
How do you tell the difference between a MY98 AND MY99, i know its 4 pots but can you tell from the outside?
Any other tips would be welcome

MY98 has the old style front bumper, the MY99 has the updated bumper with the orange bits in it.
If it's a late MY99 then it might have the updated wheels and colour coded mirrors as well.
MY99 has an alarm with remote unlocking, MY98 doesn't unless you fit it yourself.
MY98 has the black/grey seats. MY99 has the Black/Blue seats.
MY98 has a MOMO steering wheel with the boss in black. MY99 has a MOMO steering wheel with the BOSS in aluminium effect.
Under the hood. MY98 has the older 208BHP small turbo engine. MY99 has the newer 215BHP Phase II engine. Both have the same torque though and Subaru reckon the performace difference to be around .1 secs 0-60.
That's all I can think of for now.

Most new MY's start in october of the year before, you could be lucky enough to have an early MY99 rather than an MY98, the chassis number should give it away thou, check out www.sidc.co.uk and see what year yours is

MY98 also has the low spoiler, MY99 has the higher one.
IMHO, the MY98 spoiler looks better - the MY99 spoiler is neither the subtle low one or the **** off big STi/22B/P1 type, which rule.

This is under faq's on the sidc site but heres some info for you to check first
The 7 digit "applied model" code found on the vehicle identification plate inside the engine bay is decoded in the following way.
1.Series code G=Impreza S=Forester B=Legacy etc.
2.Body type F=Wagon C=Sedan
3.Engine type 8=2.0L Turbo
4.Year code A=MY93 B=MY94 C=MY95&96 D=MY97 (facelift) E=MY98 F=MY99 G=MY00
5.Number of doors 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door wagon/hatch
6.Model type 8=WRX 7=RA type E=Sti D=Sti Type R & RA
7.Transmission D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD
So for example an MY99 will say GC8F48D.
Well actually those are for the jap imports.
take into mind that my MY00 is GC8KD3Y an MY99 may be GC8J? but the biggest give a way is definately the steering wheel, no alloy center part, not an MY99 (or 4 pots!)

Should also say that the chassis number can be found on the bulkhead at the back of the engine (lhs when looking into the bay) there are a few letters/numbers in front first but you should see the GC part

Yup they are Si, i put my first few digits from my MY00 up there so there should be a comparison, also i think the high level spoiler, 4 pots and steering wheel will be a big givaway but this car sounds like an my99 if it was manufactured in nov 98.

This is a picture of my MY98 and has the old style front bumper with clear indicators. Look carefully at the front and you can see the clear front indicator in the front bumper in the top of three slots where as the MY99/MY00 (bottom picture) has a smaller indicator and only two slots and in the bottom slot an orange thing.
