which would be the fasted down a B road with lots of bends
a car with 6 speed
or a car with 5 speed (they have the same power)
when the max speed you could achieve because of the road would be 70 mph

 

Had the 5 speed, uk 6 speed and now a jdm 6 speed
all classics with different levels of tune and I have to say the jdm box does it for me. The gearing is nice and short which some don't like as you have to keep going through the gears but I love it you feel right envolved with the car changing up and down. Personal opinion mate you will get mixed views on this but jdm gets my vote

 

I found the uk 5 speeds on the wrx/turbo not to be the best for this, its more of a cruising box, had trouble once with an M3 SMG, it went and I was struggling for the right gear, 4 was too much and 5 wasnt enough
Next car was a JDM twin scroll, you could jump gears in that and you had umph, but it had lots of torque which helped

jdm 5 speed for me, only compared to uk 6, not tried the jdm 6.

 

5 speed all the way the less time you spend changing the quicker you go

 

I had a uk 5 speed and replaced it with a jdm 5 speed, great acceleration all the way upto 130, feels alot quicker than the uk box. Never used a 6 speed so i cant comment

 

If you are a good driver, the 6 speed. If you aren't so good, the 5 speed is more forgiving

the ra box with its short ratio is meant to be awsome (i have never tried) but out of the 5 speed uk, wrx and sti box i dpo say i prefer the 6 speed and out of the uk and jdm 6 speed the jdm wins for me, might be as i have a high power'd car but it is easy to find the right gear were for me on the 5 speed it seem to be missing an inbetween gear where sometimes you want to drop a gear it will rev to high and other you want to shift up but then revs drop to low but with a 6 speed it seems always right

just my two bits and i guess it is horses for courses but best thinkg to do is drive a few different cars to get a feel for it. i would suggest driving a 6 speed in a classic as that is what you will have it in to see if you like it

 

Is your 6 speed info uk or JDM mate?
Also,the wrx and ra final drives are the same...is this right?
My old scoob lost 30mph top end when swapping between the 2 boxes.

i would noit really go by what they and everyone say's as it will be the OP that has to drive and live with it everyday. for me the stories of how short the ra boxes are although on spirited driving i guess would be a hoot but as an everyday car doing long runs i think it would od my head in. and i have tried the other 4 and found the jdm box suits me just fine.

so again best thing to do is go and test them, there are plenty of members on here and some should be local a few beer tokens after the drive and i am sure a select few will let you try it for yourself

 

The close ratio box is fantastic, just not on a motorway 70mph and sitting at 3.8-4k gets abit irritating lol

 

The JDM 6 speed ratios are very similar to the 5 speed ra box, both do 80mph at around 4k rpm in top gear.

I thought the jdm 6 speed had shorter ratio's than the uk? not that i have driven one. I thought the ratios where not far off the ra box :S

 

1st to 4th are the same in both the UK 6 speed and JDM 6 speed, however the JDM has a shorter 5th and 6th gear.

Yes the UK hawkeye sti 6 speed has longer ratios compared to any earlier 6 speed, ideal for a big power car trails The JDM hawkeye still has the shorter ratios as they still use the 2 litre engine.

Nope, everything just bolts on but you will need an R180 3.9 diff if you get the JDM box or for a UK 6 speed will need the R180 3.54 diff.

If the maximum speed was 70mph it's a bloody tight road and you'd only be using third, at most, in each box.

The car with a 6MT transmission would be 30-40kg heavier and so it would accelerate fractionally slower.

In addition, if we're talking about cars being driven on the limit and standard road gearboxes, the 6MT would potentially lose out a little due to the need to make more gearchanges than the five speeder. Every time you're changing gear the car isn't being pushed forward so each one slows you down. Unless of course the powerband on the engine concerned was so narrow that you could get it off boost a lot of the time by using fewer, wider spaced gears.

Remember that Peugeot went from 6 to routinely running a five speed box on their Worldrallycars (and at one point a four) because the engine was flexible and tractable enough to work well over a wider speed range, and because the gearbox ended up simpler, stronger and more reliable as a result. And that's in a context where there was a very fast automated gearchange. More gears is not always better especially for the sort of driving you're talking about - especially when you've got to reach down to the gearstick and use the clutch every time.

Bottom line is that it's a very artificial question. I suspect the 5MT car would be the quicker, but there would be very little in it.
