Default Help me mod my WRX, sensibly

Hey folks
I'm new to the forum - picking up my first Impreza (a WRX on an 07) from the dealer on Friday.

It will already be the quickest car I've owned (I run 4x4s as my main motors), but I'm eager to tweak it a bit.

So, ignoring styling mods, what should I do to it? I'm thinking of the prodrive pack for £1,600 or so - is that a good start.

All advice welcomed.
Cheers

I wouldnt go down the Prodrive route. You can get more bang for your buck by decatting (can be done on the cheap, secondhand as I did) the exhaust, and a remap from a reputable tuner, some of which are Jolly Green Monster, Bob Rawle, Dynamix, etc. Depends whereabouts in the country you are but its worth travelling to get the best service by the most experienced tuner. Some more will be along to guide you further.

re map and Exhaust will gain you more than PPP will the map will me a one off for just your car not just a base map like the ppp is. a rear roll bar 22" will help turn in giving you a very fast road car

As said above, a good 3 inch turbo back exhaust (either sports cat or decat), panel air filter and remap will see you with better performance than the PPP and for considerably less money.

Where are you based?

Based Kent. What would a 3 inch turbo back exhaust sound like, and would it exceed 95db?

Sounds sweet as. Mine (Miltek) is 91db at 5200rpm on static noise test for track days.

You don't need a STi top mount (intercooler) - your existing one is very good and a lot better than previous year's wrx intercoolers and will be plenty good enough for everything that the little turbo can push through your engine and more.

Hi fella and welcome aboard, do you have any goals as to what sort of power you want? a good first stage would get you to around 280bhp for about £1300, this would include a full 2.5" sport cated exaust system for around £500, uprated panel filter £40 ish, uprated fuel pump £80 ish, iridium heat range 7 spark plugs £60 ish, then an ecu-tek remap at around £600 as you have to pay to open the ecu-tek licence on the first remap, any further remaps would cost iro £200 , at this level of power your td04 turbo will be close to its max, your intercooler will be fine as i ran my 2006 wrx at 330bhp on the std top mount intercooler for a while, once you've got board with 280bhp then its time for a bigger turbo and sti version 8 top mount intercooler, if you plan to go above 350bhp get a 3" exaust system first as last and by then a cold air induction kit, another good wrx upgrade (without breaking the bank) is uprated springs, uprated rear anti roll bar and a full geometry set up (i use powerstation in tewksbury), the brakes are powerfull but will fade after a spirited drive so you may want to consider an upgrade there to

Thanks for all the advice there folks - lots for me to think about. Seems like the exhaust and re-map might be a place to start.

Hmmm - thinking cap on. I'll see what the car is like when I pick it up on Friday and take it from there.

Cheers

My top tip is........if you are on a budget like most of us are, look for secondhand. If you can avoid the odd scammer on here, all the items you require come up very often on the For Sale section, and you will save loads of money.
For example I bought a Prodrive sportcat for £120ish, the mid decat pipe, Prodrive again for £35, a straight through de resonated pipe for £10(!), and a Prodrive backbox for £70ish. I even bought a Japspeed de catted up-pipe on ebay for £19. It is the flexijoint item (not the best example) but not a bad price. So for £250ish, I have a total decat with good parts to boot. (or so I think)

the sky is the limit really my hawkeye wrx will be at around 500bhp later in the year, best bet is to give some one like Dynamix a call / email before you buy parts. cheap can become expensive in the long run.

If your buying from a "stealer" then beware of modding if you have a Proven Subaru Warranty.

They will squirm and shimmy if anything goes wrong
