Very sensitive to poor quality fuel, fragile mafs, will run lean if decatted and not mapped, not good motorway cars due to gearing 80mph = 4k rpm.
Plus points dccd, awesome acceleration due short gearing, best factory heads on a classic and quicker 2.5 ratio rack.

Cheers Banny, I think I shall be racking your brains when I do get one!!!!
I think Il either have to repalce MAFs once a year or go Simtek & mafless from what iv heard. Not sure wether to go for a Ver 6 with ecutek which would mean no need for simtek, but will still need mafs changed regularly? Do all Ver 6's have Ecutek?

All Imprezas MY99 onwards can be ecutek'd Ricky but yes would defo recommend changing the maf at least once each year.
Agree with Tony brakes are pretty cack as standard so consider an upgrade if you are going to be driving it hard
Couple of nice ones I found on pissheads

You can ecutek the v5 and v6 maf's are ok for quite a few years if you keep to a standard airbox set up, they only cost 100 quid anyway so not that expensive
Only the limiteds in the V5's come with the quick rack, one thing I really miss apart from that and any issues with silly power/gearbox, these are pretty reliable cars

Bite the bullet man. These are very entertaining cars-not the biggest powered scoobies out there but in saying that it's not too expensive to get a reliable 330/330 (roughly) out of them. Say decat, full exhaust system, walbro fuel pump, PANEL filter & ported headers then you need a remap for these straight away. Ecutek is adequate. Throw in a set of decent stoppers and you've got yourself a rally car for the road
As said before they're reliable if you get them mapped for your fuel and mods & keep an eye on the maf. Also avoid induction kits.
With the DCCD they are very good fun in the wet if you like a bit of sideways action....best of both worlds RWD & 4WD

I decatted mine and had it rolling roaded and road tested with a wideband and the fuelling was spot on. No a hint of det on the knocklink either. They do need octane booster due to they love of 100ron though.
The quick rack was a factory option on the type R, along with a roller bearing turbo and 16" te-37's. If the quick rack was not speciied you got the standard one. V ltds were different though.
You're really asking two questions here, what advantages do version5/6's hae and what further advantages to type r's have.

Did the v5/6 type r not come with VF28 as standard? Afaik that is a roller bearing turbo as standard and never came as a sleeve bearing turbo.
In regards to the rack just going by what was on my brother's v5 type r but Subaru do have a wierd and wonderful way of selecting parts from the parts bin
Have a mate who has had two version 5 sti saloons and he managed to blow the engine on both after decatting the car but pretty sure he was not using octane booster, which was pretty probably the culprit then.

Yeah they had the vf 28 but on the option list was either the 23 or 24, can never remember what one as it's been a long time since mine was sold on for a bigger item.
The quick rack option cars apparently had a sticker on the rear window to let you know if it had been specified ot not.
Booster is a must on an unmapped sti5/6 INHO. When I pulled the heads off of mine the pistons/bores were in amazing condition and when I had my apexi pfc fitted the knock count was one of the lowest I'd ever seen normally not making it out of single figures. That was after running it for over a year with a decat and no remap, it made 320 on the dyno in that spec.

I love this forum!!!!
I come back on this morning as see so many replies & useful information that I really would have struggled to find! Cheers chaps for all your help so far
I think I am now leaning more towards a Ver5 Ltds & Ver 6's as I do love the quick rack on my Spec C, though not sure how many turns it is? Will probably stick with Ecutek to begin with, while keeping std airbox. I didnt realise that the Mafs could be ok with std airbox & that they were 100 quid & not more. Mods will have to be as suggested above (inc brakes) & then remap.
If I can find a good/low mileage one in the UK with well thought out mods (simialr to above) from an enthusiast then that will be perfect. If not then Il most probably import a low mileage Grade 4 from Japan & do the mods myself. Will work out more expensive but has its advantages this way.

The ra has the quickrack (2.25 over the fast 2.50 rack) as standard, love my type R but its nowhere near as good as a spec c for driving or on the road though you get to play with the dccd more
You can find a decent one in the uk, mine has been here since jan 1999 and only had 27.5k on the clock with a fair few mods, needed a little work in a few places (paint mainly due to our weather and a slight bump on the rear that needed a respray, plus the rear arches) but apart from that she is pretty sweet (and the body had one very small ding on the wing where a stone hit her, until some muppet dented my passenger door last month so need that taking out )
