Majority of the bits are as per a UK car of the same model year so can be purchased from any Subaru main dealer. Those that are different can usually be found at the sort of specialists you're thinking of.

Turbos are the main things I'd say.

Post up your model and then someone will prob. be able to tell you more or less all of what's different.

Many franchise dealers will turn their nose up when you mention JDM cars. There are a few dealers/traders that will get you the parts at far cheaper prices than the Francjhise dealers anyway.

Try Scoobyworld, Scooby Parts, Grade A Subaru, Jap Performance Parts or Import Car Parts all get a good from me as I have used them all.

I found that not long after buying my car. Wouldn't price be up a set of wiper blades, never mind the coil packs I was after.

Wouldn't have minded too much, but, they had a type R for sale on the forecourt. Imagine someone buying that, and then get told to **** off when wanting parts or servicing.

Windscreens are probably your biggest issue, hard to get the correct one over here

Import is better specced, and parts are readily available, just not from most dealers.

Buy the import.

I have a newage JDM S202 and I have no problem getting genuine parts from Keith Price Subaru, I just ring them up with the chassis number, they fax Subaru UK and I pick them up or they deliver next day.

Buy a UK model and you get 216 bhp ish as standard at the most. I've had all Jap Imports from the start and the only major problem I had was turbo went. I'd go for a new-ish import into the country, let someone else put the alarm on it, service it etc. and then pick up a 280bhp bargain.
