Default a little info/help needed please....

Hi Guys, Had my classic 96' imported scoob for just under a year now, When i bought it i was told that it is a wrx shell with an sti engine fitted. Now im looking to develop it a bit more & mainly use it for track days - currently stripped out & fitting a roll cage.

One question i have is this, How can i tell if its an sti lump or not? I can tell that the manifold used to be red at some point but thats all flaked off now, so im thinking someone a just painted it & not sure. the engine code stamped on the top is EJ20? Is there anything else i could tell from the outside?
Also what turbo should be fitted as standard to these? i've had a quick look but can not find any numbers or info on the current fitted item with out removing it.
I have noticed that it has a Z4 ecu fitted & from what i can gather on this site, that is a good upgrade?
I had it Rr'd at Torque of the devil yesterday and it managed 251.4bhp & 205lbs of torque, would you say that is pretty much standard? He mentioned that the boost seemed to build up very slowly & not hit its peak boost level at all, he mentioned it might be a dodgey actuator, so i have taken a look and it does seem very stiff to move by hand, also seems to have a mitubushi logo stamped on it???

Sorry for all the questions, i have looked around the site for answers first but to no avail. Just trying to figure out what im dealing with here.

Regards, Stephen.

if its a mitsubshi turbo, most likely a TD-05 on an import, uk cars used TD-04 turbos.
205 ft lb is not right at all.

sounds like a turbo problem like you say

EJ20 is the standard engine for all 2 litre imprezas.
Z4 is the standard ecu for a pre facelift 96 wrx
TD05-16G is the standard turbo

Subaru EJ engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So the guy thinks it may be a dodgy actuator but didn't have a look for you?

Well it was a big group of us that went from a local mixed car club. we just did power runs and that was it.he had so many cars to get through that he did'nt really have the time. After all thats all we wanted.

How can i tell if its knackered? i have removed it and its very stiff to pull in and out be hand? i have nothing to campare it against thats trouble.

Not quite right, JDM WRX saloons ran TD05 (early cars definately) and the wagons ran the TD04 turbos, pre 97 UK cars ALL ran TD05 turbos, thats saloons and wagons, only from the phase 1.5 engines did the UK car then convert to the TD04 turbo.

Doubtful, you would hear a turbo issue and it wouldnt be hitting 251bhp which isnt bad for a 14 year old car that is suppose to run 257bhp as standard (260ps), though there is an underlying issue there, a dealer/speciallist is probably recommended to see why the car isnt making full boost (supposedly) though it wouldnt be hitting that until about 3.5k anyway.

power seems about right. i assume you are running it on super unleaded. peak boost for a z4 ecu is 12.7 psi so to me your car seems fine.
