what turbo does my uk have ?
Hi guys , just bought a 98 classic wagon turbo ....I presume it has the td04 turbo ? If I wanted a bit more 'poke' apart from doing the normal de cats etc , what would you recommend for a turbo upgrade as seems to be so many ! ??

theres loads, but your ECU 97 and 98`s are un mappable. you will need to buy a mappable ecu plus the map. it will cost you a good grand just for this.

can you not just chuck an ecu from a 99 in it then ?... just say yes or no , don't need all the tech jargon as to why ...simple yes or no will do as don't want to waste everybodys time typing away !!

in short, like me, woody69 your self and many others on here.... we cant do **** all!! BUT!!!........... (and this will start a yes you can no you cant war) some say (and im 1 of them) that the earlyer ECU`s learn and sort them selfs out to suit without a map (not 100% like a map would) but enough to stop it going bang. 4 of my pals and a few other on here run de-cats, full zorst systems, inductions bigger intercoolers without maps and have been running fine for years. but changin ya turbo and injectors without a map is a defo nono. I run a td04 which has been highly polished, TB highly polished as are my headers and ported. a FMIC and a Apexi and mine pulls like a train!! (V555MAC will back this up!!lol) Loads faster than standerd. It has only been like it for 3 weeks or so so reliablity reports from me time will tell.
all is not lost mate, but if you want BIG power you will need to spend £1000`s!

don't worry , talking about cars would never upset me ! wow ...that must be a great scoob........Has he spent alot on it ? The only reason i said skyline is that they come with more power from the start (compared to a standard uk turbo of course), I did look at an r32 which was lovely and f...ing quick but 6k ...I bought the scoob for 1300 ! So the scoob is by far the better value......maybe i'll buy the skyline aswell ? ! lol

Talk me through this highly polished TD04, what has that achieved exactly?

the inlet has been polished like a mirror and has been slightly bored out so there is less of a lip from inlet pipe to blades. i.e the bit ogf the turbo thats inside the inlet pipe has no lip on it. no massive gains but better air flow, = more responce. same as my TB, that has no lip on it any more maybe a mm of it between pipe work and TB. that again polished to a mirror finish. nothing like your used to mate with you 600000000bhp motors but every little helps.
explaned good enough?

I stand corrected, its actually £550 - www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk
Although that is the first time round, after that its (from) £150 for a new map.
You have to buy the ECUTEK licence the first time round & that is what bumps the cost up.

all these little 0.0000001%`s add up eventually. And im sure way before the day of the re-mapped ECU when there was ported and polished carbs exhausts etc this was a fact then too?? i know slightly different but basic engineering is still applyed without spending £100`s on a bought product that has basicly had the same **** done to it! Just coz it aint in the Subaru modding book for well packed walleted dummy`s hand book, dont mean its wrong does it??
Brb, off to remove my floor matts!!

I see what you're saying mate in that th sum of all mods and all that. However for the gains made and the time taken to do this simple things like removing back seats would produce far more benefits. I would imagine that polishing the TD04 would have similar gains to not having breakfast and saving the weight lol.
As said I agree in the principle but the gains from this are that miniscule that it really isnt worth the time or effort. I also cant say I've ever seen any of the top tuners polishing their turbos to increase flow. Allow I have seen polished compressor housings to make them look pretty
Good luck none the less
