Hi, im new to this site as i am looking at buying a Scooby in the coming weeks.

My question is as a first time buyer are non STi Scoobys worth buying? My budget is about £6000-7000.

For that price mate.. Youll get a decent STI, even a V5 Type R which in my eyes is one of the best classics and mega cheap at the moment due to the recession..

Personally.. i wouldn't buy a non STI... But thats mua... They are worth the extra

 

depends what your after mate,

If you want an STI though definately buy one. Otherwise, like me you would only end up buying STI parts for your WRX anyway.

I was looking at 04 plate WRX's with about 60,000 miles on the clock, would i really notice the difference of all the upgrades on an STi, i know brakes make a big difference but what else would i notice.

Ive heard that suspension knocks a lot on Scooby's is that true?

 

Depends how you want to use the car. It also varies greatly from classic to newage as to what the difference actually is between a WRX and an STi.

Personally, I don't see the point of a WRX in the newage format. Besides the cost of buying they have no advantage over the STi unless you like a marginally softer ride (change the springs on the STi if so) or prefer a 5 speed box over the six speed (why?). Most people just end up pouring a small fortune into their WRX to make it as good as a standard STi.

There is no real difference in insurance, tax or running costs.

Your budget is probably the only issue here. You may just squeeze a blobeye STi (04ish onwards I think from memory) but more likely a bugeye STi, which IMO is the ugliest Impreza so far. That's not saying a lot as the Impreza aint exactly a looker at it's best (i.e. Hawkeye and then Classic IMO). This is all subjective of course.

Personally, with your budget I would look for a well sorted Classic STi or maybe even a Type R, RB5 or P1.

Gear box (6 speed and stronger)
DCCD
Stronger and more powerful engine
Better suspension
Sportier interior
Sportier styling
Better wheels

= better car.

 

As a WRX owner, I'd recommend you to go for a new age STI, if only for the gearbox

 

Your best bet is to go and test drive mate... and View and see differences.. Pop down to a local meet and introduce yourself.. Im sure people wont mind you having a gander round there cars to see whats best to suit..


RE Classic shape... As for a 4 door.. A 2 door has very easy access for the rear and very roomy.. So i wouldn't dismiss it..

Which scoob do you want.. Classic or Newage?

 

Hi mate welcome why not go to your local Subaru dealer and test drive both then you can feel the difference your self, they should have something in your budget! and yes there can be problems with rear shocks on some scoobs normally noise from the rears, does not affect performance but can be annoying at low speeds

 

Simple fix though ^^^^^^^

 

A 2door type r is not ideal if you are planning on using it with family..........trying to use a baby seat is awkard and if the worst happened would you really want your offspring in the back with no doors to open...

 

Test drive both, find whats best for you and your family...

 

Not really, ok if you want to take the shocks out and try to re pack them with grease, quite a big job tho. Or you start replacing with after market stuff which can be very expensive

don't forget the wagon's perfect for the family 5 door buggy in the back and still plenty of power..

 

Of course it is... I fit 2 baby seats in the rear every day easily for the wife and theres never a problem getting in or out... Even fit 2 prams in the boot

Ive always had 2 door cars mainly because i dont like 4 doors. Plenty of room

 

Yeah, i think a trip to a dealer might be on the cards, what i dont want to do is get a ropey STi within my budget and i really like the look of 04 plate cars, we'll just have to see i suppose.
