may sound stupid but are there any differences? im sure ive read somewhere that the 2006 sti has 280bhp and the 2007 sti has 300bhp?

No difference apart from cosmetic, MY06 has better rear lights (less lexarse) and has black front bumper vents which break up the sea of single colour paint at the front. MY07 has body colour vents which blend and look a little pointless IMHO. BHP etc all the same.

wrong as all UK TYPE WRX STI are all 280 bhp

as above there are not any big differences in them both
