I've had 4 different back boxes.

1st was a magnex which was ok, bit too quiet. OK finish.

2nd was a 5" H&S Jap style angled exit. Good quality, looked awesome, defening on a long journey, moved off its hanger and burnt a big hole in rear bumper. Sold it in the end as couldn't cope with the noise.

3rd was TSL Grp N. By far the best for looks (not too big but meaty looking). Sound was just right. Excellent quality.

4th was on my Type RA when I bought it and it was a scoobysport backbox which I believe is H&S. Was louder than the TSL although much smaller to look at. Didn't really like it that much and had I kept the RA I would have bought another TSL Grp N.

If I buy another scoob I will probably get another Grp N.

HKS Silent Hi-Power.

Pure quality engineering and far better made than any British rubbish IMO. Quiet when you need it to be, but open the taps and it's a different story.

The Nur Spec R sounds absolutely nuts with a full decat system - friend had one and I couldn't believe how loud it was.
I've had the standard WRX box, a Racebox from Scoobyworld and now have a Milsport Milsport catback system - gave me a headache when I first had it fitted and drove it to Brum for a weekend, but now it's coked up it sounds nice, and not so loud it scares people - you get noticed but with a smile instead of a scowl .
If you don't want something too quiet but not too in yer face either I'd recommend it.
The Racebox was a small improvement over the original backbox but too quiet for me.

I have a racebox with a full decat and sounds very good, especially when using the right foot. Not too much drone on the motorway. If you use your Impreza every day then I'd recommend it. Quality is excellent.

I'm going to try the Blitz Nur Spec S next as want something with a bit more burble.

Currently:

H&S 2.5" straight through with a 3.5" exit on the JDM - nice and quiet town/motorway, but the roar when fully open is brilliant.

Still need the rear window open a little for full effect which is the volume level I like

2.5" with 4" exit single cat unknown brand on my Sti wagon which is driving me nuts - too loud & droans

Had a scoobsport on a V9 Sti which was nuts (nice) on full tilt (quiet enough round town/motorway), which I also liked.

3" Blitz Nur Spec-R for me, quality is second to none and it sounds awesome as long as you can handle the volume!

i had an H+S Jap style but wasnt happy with the build quality,it had weld splatters all over it and just wasnt what near £300 just for a backbox should look like

now have a Blitz nur spec R but had to fit the Bung, without was too barryboyish for me,it was loud but the loud like a saxo, but with bung in,it resembles a sophisticated scoob again

Genome for me, the best of many backboxes over the years and ticks all of the 3 main points IMO

mainly i like it because it's a jack of all trades exhaust and that's not often you'll hear that.
it's surprisingly quiet when pootling around, gives a great, loud noise when you're pushing on. doesn't drone at all on the motorway and looks just about right size wise

i would admit i would be hard pushed to decide on the best sounding bacbox though, tough to decide between the Genome and the Afterburner. god that Afterburner sounded evil, just too much to live with on a daily basis though

Magnex Oval backbox, different to the usual 5" chav stuff and sounds the rawest backbox I've heard at the top end of the revs.

I have one of their silencers on my Westfield. A very nice unit. I went for a 7' repackable fitting onto my existing manifold. If I had the money I would have got them to make this too as theirs look so much better than the Westfield one. They aint cheap though but handmade and look the mutts nuts.
Can't say how well thry would go on a scooby thought. I got mine to reduce the noise to help with trackdays.

Got a racebox on the scooby and can agree with other comments on here. I use mine everyday so I don't want anything too loud. The noise level is fine for long journeys but still good when you want it to be.

I am slightly biased though.
