Default fuel pump not working, do they just stop without making any dodgy noises 1st?

my 98 turbo was fine, no buzzing from fuel pump etc. then one morning last week it was turning over, but didnt even attemp to fire up. No fuel was being fed to the engine, so i took the pump out of the tank and connected a 12v from the battery terminals to the 2 connectors actually on the pump. nothing. is it dead? on my old escorts the pump would make a horrible noise for a while before giving up, but this was was pretty silent the whole time...

any help? anyone know of a 2nd hand one available?

cheers, andre

Mine never made any noises to indicate it was about to give up, it just stopped working one day.
For the price of a Walbro fuel pump you may be better just buying one of them as they aint that expensive.

so if it was working, i presume putting 12v on the pump terminals would make it work (skipping out the capacitor thats above it)

As above, buy a Walbro uprated pump as it is much cheaper, you cannot buy just the pump from Subaru you have to buy the whole unit (pump & sender assay)

Edited to say: yes it should work if you apply 12v directly to the pump

If yours is a UK Turbo why not get a JDM WRX/STI pump. Loads are being removed and replaced for Walbro's it'll be cheaper too.

I had a similar problem and then found a blown fuse Check your fuse panel in the dash. Middle row, second in from the right.

A good point but it can't be a fuse if he is directly supplying 12v to the pump as it would bypass the fuse box.

What does the capacitor do? Up the voltage or lower it? Either way it may stuff the pump connecting straight to the 12v

It's a 12v pump, so connecting it directly to 12v would not harm it.... A capacitor stores electricity, & has the effect of smoothing out any small fluctuations in the voltage supply.

Mine had the same symptoms, but it turned out to be just the relay to the pump - obviously not this in the OP's case if he has tested the pump disconnected from the car, but for any other owners, check the fuse and relay before shelling out for a new pump !
