Question

Had SUB plate on car from new. Now selling and been offered £160 for it. What will DVLC charge me to sell it to someone else. How long does the process take?

DVLA won't sell it for you, but if you can find a willing buyer, then it will cost 80quid to transfer it to their car.

Cool

Best way is to put it on a retention certicate (RC) thats costs £105. When its on a RC then you can sell it to anybody and there is provision on the RC to do this, DVLA wont charge you anything. The £105 includes the £80 transfer fee . Which means it will costs the new owner nothing to put the plate on their car. So obviously you want to add 105 to whatever price you want for the plate . Putting it on a RC also means you can keep it for 12 months with no extra charge and you can put it on another car for nothing yourself, if you decide not to sell. It gives you 12 months free to get a good price . After 12 months its costs you another £25 for a new RC and retain the number if you dont the plate goes back to the DVLA but you get the 80 fee back BUT nothing for the plate.

Personally I always put my private plate on a RC before I sell the car usually about a month before I seriously look for another car. It just makes life a whole lot easier. I can then transfer to the new car when I want and the dust has settled and gives the neighbours time to check out the new reg .

It can take a couple of weeks to get the RC and the new V5 with a newly allocated number for your car so do it now to avoid any problems.

Cheers
