When the mechanical speedometer is disconnected the ECU will go into 'limp'. This is because the speed limiter is activated by the speedometer and the feature is designed to prevent simpe circumvention. Make the speedo work again (probably a mechanical problem as its cable driven) and youll find the car working again properly. If your cars reading in MPH (so therefore now limited to 180MPH not 180KPH), then Id suspect the 1.6:1 reduction gear, as cheap ones fail and that would definitely cause it.

There were NO 1993 STIs though: sorry. The very first batch of one hundred cars were produced in May 1994, with a second batch of two hundred cars being retro-converted some time later (both Saloons & Sports Wagons).
