temp gauge question

temp gauge question
hello,
when trying to fit some white dials i broke my temp gauge by trying to take the needle off .
ive since bought a second hand temp gauge and since fitting it when turning the ignition on the temp gauge goes straight up to the highest point , i.e off the gauge past the hottest point, it does this in one swoop not slowly.
ive tried taking it on and off , refitting ect but with no luck
before throwing in the towell and buying another set of clocks or an aftermarket gauge has any one got any ideas !!
