Default alternator

missed the blooby chatsworth meet today as the car decided not to start this morning flat battery again only replaced it last october,, anyway after upgrading the aa to home start £90 i might add.
he told me the battery wasnt charging and thiught the alternator had gone!!
what im asking is should i just go and get another one and fit it myself or spend another £50 or so getting someone to come out and tell me its had it.
also are they as easy to fit as it looks??
