looking at a uk 2001 wrx....
Hi everyone,
I am looking to buy a UK 2001 (x reg) wrx . Its got fssh mileage is 76k,
its dark blue, and has had its blobeyes de-blobbed
12mths MOT, 2mths tax, 3 months warrenty.
Has a cat-back stainless and a funny looking HKS bov.
Test driving it 2 morro.
What i would like to ask if there are any pointers i should look out
for.
Also modding it, can i get a bit more out of it.
also will a fmic make a difference.
Many thanks
Tina.

If you can stretch to the STI then great, but the main things to check for:
Look for hesitation when coming on boost, especially as it has a DV fitted. If it has not been remapped they can run rough as a result.
Just make sure it pulls nice and cleanly and all you notice when putting your foot down is a surge.
Check for vibration on the clutch, if it is on it's way out it is a big job.
It's not worth changing for a FMIC unless your heading for over 300BHP, and by that point you'll need a new turbo and bigger injectors, plus an induction kit to allow it to fit. Best bet initially is to decat/fit a sports cat, and decat the up-pipe. There's 3 cats so go down to one at the most. Fit a good panel filter (eg K&N) and get a remap. That'll see a good reliable 280bhp and could be done for less than£1500 including fitting if you don't want to get you're hands dirty.

Yes it probably can, but if you are heading beyond 300 bhp it is worth considering as it will reduce charge temps by more which can give more power. Alternatively, Andy Forest reckons the STI TMIC is good for 450bhp.
Again, much of it is down to preference.

forgot to mention how much a can get the car for, its £4500,
as knocked him down for cash.
Dont think i can afford a sti as i have looked, unless i go for an
older one, but its buying one as i dont know much about them,
and my oh aint really mechanically minded
(and he dont like to meddle with my cars)

Prices seem to doing quite well at the moment so that's not too bad, providing everything works and the cars runs right. I bought a smiliar spec on, but lower miles and suspension but no DV for £10k just over 3 years ago

Very nice, the rear spoiler isn't standard either. Check the boot operation as the WRX springs are not suited to heavier spoilers. Just check how quickly it slams down. You'll not get the garage to change anything, but you can account for the fact you may need the STI boot springs in your price

Funny you should say that.... popped the boot & it didnt spring open ?
will want different alloys on it, been looking & its only a sacrifice
to a couple of radley hand bags
do they boost ok, ive had a wrx wagon & it was a nightmare.
Things went wrong with it & kept blowing the dump valve off.
but i loved how it handled & was so comphy.
I drive a 4th gen lude jdm vtec, i know vtec is no ay near turbo
when it kicks in, but should i notice the pull when i floor it.
(info for test drive 2morro)
I have been looking at other cars, keep coming back to looking
at a scooby, looked at a P plate M3 evo today, (dont shout LOL)
The money i am spending is some of my inherritance off my mam,
as she fell asleep forever 7 weeks ago and my lude's rear arches
are starting to go, so nowis the time it should go.
So i dont want to buy something i will regret (like a M3... vanos broke
equals... big bill for bmw)

IT shouldn't spring open, but it should need to closed rather than drop shut and slam whe you close it.
DV should never blow off unless there's a problem. You'll feel the turbo pull and it will go from sedate 2 litre to an nice but controlled rush. It'll set you back more than a couple of radleys for some nice alloys (my Mum is a brand freak, it's not me)

i got a Y reg wrx,
my main problem is once you get the modding bug you won't stop!! god bless the world
i had the car since new, and i'm still changing bits to it,
originally i only changed the looks of it, morettes, lip, skirts, etc
i then decided on some power, so i mapped, list goes on,
i'm just gonna copy any paste my facebook profile
exterior mods:- skirts, rear and from splitters, grille, roof scoop, led washers (but wanna change back) rota boost wheels, rood spoiler, spoiler extensions,
Interior mod:- blue mats, kick plates, (but now comes off ) colour coded fascia, gear stick, EL dials
ICE:- Kenwood DNX7200 + BT, rear view cam, PS2, focal bus 25 (under seat sub) novus alpha, flashing subaru light,
ENGINE:- K & N panel filter, front strut brace, walbro fuel pump, sport cat downpipe, decatted uppipe, 7" backbox, brembo 4 pots, ecutek, NGK PFR 7B
HANDLING: WHITELINE FRONT ARBS, REAR ARBS AND ALLOY DROPLINKS
power:- 268.7bhp 290lb ft
that is upto today,
tbh, if you this is your first turbo car, you need to get used to the turbo lag ,and control/use it, and then once you enjoy it and get used to the turbo, you want more power, ie mapping it etc,
and then once you get used to that you want more :O
currently as you can see the power i got (or lack of) i already got used to it, (mapped it last year)
i now have a VF35 and pink injectors in my boot ready to fit and map, once i fix some minor repairs
hope you have fun on it
not got any decent pics but once i get some i post some :/

It sounds ok for the money, whoever has owned it before has done some minor mods, zorst dump valve etc, which are all things you dont need to do.
If you looked a bit further you might find a totaly standard car for the same money which some would say was a better buy
If it drives ok pulls well with no hesitation or flat spots. Stops in a straight line, no pulling to the side, it should be ok. Check where it was parked after your test drive for oil/water leaks and look in the service history make sure the cam belt has been changed recently.
Good luck

Looks a tidy car in the best colour! As mentioned the spoiler and lights are not original although the morettes are a subaru dealer option/aftermarket part. Can't tell if the rear spoiler is a replica or a genuine STi without seeing the back.
I have a replica spoiler on mine with the standard WRX torsion bars (springs) the boot is quite heavy but not a problem. Performance wse don't expect to be impressed until around 2.3-3k rpm then you should feel the acceleration increasing. Also look out for the rear shocks, these are a known weak link in these models.
Most likely mods are ARBs, drop links, decat and air filter - if the exhaust/air filter have been substantially changed the car should have been remapped. The BOV is not really needed and if it's a VTA then should really be changed or a recirculating to allow for smoother town driving.
Oh and BTW is a bug not a blob!

Also classics are old cars no matter what you say, older technologies, higher mileages, more wear, less paint protection etc.

Hi, aint bought this car yet.
Knocked the bloke down to 4.5k .... but i asked when the cambelt was
done, as the history is stamped but nothing about cambelt.
Said he phoned the last owner & said it got done at 50k
now 78k on clock.
So my fella phoned the bloke n said will you take 4200 cash,
with no proof of cambelt. He wouldnt budge abymore, as knocked him
down in the first place.
The garage rings me to say that they will get cambelt n pulley
done, 12mths mot, & 3 months warenty,
but will want £4700 cash.
Is this car worth it,
Many thanks
Tina

Ive just bought a 51 plate with the same lights and Prodrive bits including diffusers/ bodykit front and rear and the carbon(well plastic) factory interior, 57000 miles, cambelt done, in Royale blue, full stainless exhaust, brand new hawk eye alloys and Yokahama tyres, and a forge dump vv. really nice car for 4 grand private sale with no warranty.
It started at £5000.
I reckon £3600 absolute tops for yours. Its a buyers market.
If your going to spend that and want to spend more modifying, Buy an STI.

Just as a comparison i just bought a standard 53 plate (reg dec 03) with 78k on it, cambelt done, for 5k started at 6k.Shop around, the 2nd hand market is beginning to pick up and dealers are keen to turn over stock that has sat for a while.
