I don't think you can map the ECU on that year. It'll need a whole new ECU, so that's why it's gonna cost you.

If it needs the aftermarket ECU that price won't be far off.

Thanks, but has nothing to do with why I was asking.

no other way ! going to cost you for a new/second hand ecu then a map.

i recently sold my apexi and went for a simtek from simon (jgm) so i could ditch my maf, you can buy it with launch control/ anti lag or without. give him a shout and see what he has and the best deal he can do for you.

if you looking at a remap and new ecu have a think and talk with a mapper about what exactly you want. not sure if you have a jgm or uk car but you would'nt want to spend £1000 ish and still keep the td04 turbo just to gain 30 - 40 bhp. when i first started modding my scoob i have a 98 (ecu can't be mapped) i went for a apexi power fc, vf series turbo, 440 injcetors and a sti8 intercooler then map. decide on your mods, buy and fit them then pay for only 1 map 1 time cheapest way in the long run.

believe me it's well worth it just for the smile it puts on you face when you first drive down the road.

THAT is exactly why I asked. If the JGM says that's what you need and that's how much it costs, then that is that. This guy is GOD.

Good luck.

no it's a bummer and usually the thing people find out once they have purchased the car.

i think its the main reason you always see 97/98 cars have been highly modded as their is no point just swapping the ecu for 30/40 bhp.

Power engineering used to be able to modify MY97-98 ECU with a daughterboard so the mapping can be changed. Worth giving them a call to see if they still do it (they may have stopped due to lack of demand - although its still advertised on their website).

JGM can't map them without an ECU change; which is why he advises to do so ( possibly a better option in the long run if your going to keep adding mods etc)

I work in Electronics and PCB Design ...... there is no requirement at all for a ECU, whatever its Map, to cost more than £60.

And at that there is a healthy profit ...... it is the 'percieved value' which enables higher charges to be applied. Look at how many cars roll into the Scrapyard with working ECU's, sometimes taken off for re-sale, sometimes crushed. Value of these? About £20 tops.

All ECUs cost pretty much the same to make and to map .... anyone who tells you otherwise has another motive for saying so.

Not saying that some people think paying £1000 for extra power is OK, and that's up to them ....... just that I wouldn't do it, not looking at the reduced reliability.

pipe down Lewis.

The issue with aftermarket ECUs is the demand, tiny.

A company like Denso etc who make standard ECUs for a manufacturer may make 50,000 or 100,000 units and so the R&D spread that thinly is buttons by comparison.

Small time Charlies like Simtec have to spread the R&D much thicker over a tiny proportion of sales, say 1000. Add to that a small dose of 'economics 101' supply and demand, followed with a splash of 'perceived value' and the cost escalates.
Nobody would deny the component costs are miniscule in each case although there is a litle bit of 'economies of scale' in the bulk purchase of components.

Of course, they will say that £700 spent on a re-map is superb value for money .......... and that is for each to decide. But, of course, they are ever so slightly biased

I would judge them on the length of warranty offered, that's a good indication of the confidence that is placed in the ECU/Re-Map.

is this person for real, surely this and the coments on ecu's etc are a joke ??

if you can supply me with mapable ecu's for the my97/98 impreza seeing as you work in electronics i'll order 10 from you right now and i'm sure most of the mappers would be placing large trade orders with you as well.
