Warming up/ cooling down
Sorry for a boring question but as a virgin scoobie owner what the hell do you do to be on the safe side regarding Turbo care,is warming up engine a real issue and similarly how long do you wait for a cool down period.
Is it just after a blast or all the time ??
yours confused and no mechanical sense
cambelt :confused

Cambelt,
A minute or so after a blast is okay as cooler oil is needed to run through the turbo to help cool it down.
Don't rely on the water temp to judge when the car is warm enough to thrash as the oil can take up to 5 miles before it is at temp.
Scotty.

You mean all that stuff on the sticker by the door and the sun visor is true ???
Well I turn on, release brake, engage first and drop the clutch, that normally works for me, though I thought it was usual to replace the turbo anually and the timeing belt every quarter...

I let the blackbeast warm for about a 1 min, whilst I put seatbelt on, put in stereo, plug in hands free phone. Then i keep it under 3k until it's up to temp, then party time.
As for afters, well, I've got a turbo timer, which i've preset to 1 min and 5 mins. What i usually do is after a hard blat, if there is no on-road warm down time I leave it to TT for 5 mins. If there is some warm down time, and 90% of the time there is, I just drive normally, off-boost, and then let it TT for 1 min.
The other great thing about a TT is that if you blat around then pull into petrol station it will stop you from pulling out the keys and thus cutting of the engine and possibly cooking the turbo.

cambelt,
The easy solution 2 the prob is get a turbo timer. The HKS dual turbo timer`ll cost jus over £100. It varies shutdown time depending on how u`ve been drivin. Also gives u 1/4 times an 0-60 etc etc.. On cold start as Pete sez keep it under 3K an get a couple of miles under u r belt
b4 thrashin it.

Warm your car up for 30 secs before driving, give her 5-6 miles before pushing over 3k revs, the oil should be hot enough by then, warm down for 2 mins with a turbo timer if you have one (clifford alarm on mine has turbo timer) fully synthetic oil is always the best 5w40 if in warranty 15w50 mobil 1 if not

Well I normally keep my green monster below 3000rpm until temp gauge at normal and allow about a 1minute of idle or a slow cruise before switching off.
Regarding Oil, my dealer recommended semi synthetic Shell Helicoil (I think it was called) and said that Subaru don't advise fully syn as it is too thin and said to steer clear of Mobil 1... any views?

Be aware that the water temp gauge is no indication that the oil is up to temperature!
It takes around 10+ minutes for my oil pressure gauge to drop below the 100PSI mark. Be gentle for a good 5 minutes after the water temp has crept into the middle and you're enjoying hot air
Saying that, people must cane the nuts off these things and there's no reports I've seen of blown head gaskets. Still, I love mine like my own blood, so I treat it gently to start off with.
