Default Slight hesitation

Hi again

I have developed a slight hesitation at low revs , I wouldn't say missing or a flatspot but a half second hesitation , no set pattern to it. What are some of my basic checks? Requires a service , could it be a filter? Also noticed a slight oil smell after I have been driving, like when you spill a little oil on the engine when it hot. I have had a look round but can not see any leaks, no patches of oil on the floor , only thing I can see is a slight leak from the rear diff , but I don't think its that bad. As you can see from my other posts the credit card is going to be hit hard car is a 2004 sti

has it got a dump valve , if so give it a clean with carb cleaner and see if its any better , had this problem with mine for weeks until i cleaned the valve out and no problem any more , don,t worry to much about oil smell ,all the imprezas i,ve had seem to smell like that , 4ever leaking oil behind timing belt surround, just keep a check on oil levels to make sure of no sudden drops.
