Hi,
After some help please..
I had decided to get a wrx but not sure what to get know. I have got 10K to spend and had decided to get an 07 wrx with about 10K miles on the clock. But after reading the forum all evening I'm not so sure now.
Thinking I should get a slightly older sti but for the money i have they all seem to have quite high miles on the clock. I will be using the car for work so may do alot of miles and don't want to start spending money on stuff that goes wrong when the car has done a lot of miles.
Any advice would be great

Hi Ray welcome to the forum, i would never get a wrx you be kicking yourself in the future and wished you went to an STI.

If your looking for a good value car alot of people recommend the jdm import cause they got a good spec

It depends what you want from the car though i suppose. If your wanting a quick comfy family car, then get a WRX. If you want something more focused and less comfy then get the STi.
Both are excellent cars, but the STi would be an overall better buy in my opinion

I do want the sti but am just a bit worried about high mileage and some of the problems that come with that. I really want a quick car as I have never owned anything that is really quick.

£10k might blag you a Hawkeye STi if you can find one of the earliest ones, but more likely £11k (a mate just sold his low mile 06 Hawk STi for £11k). STi's after 05 are the ones to aim for as they had some major revisions to the suspension and drivetrain.

Imports are better cars with higher powered, stronger engines and many other enhanced components. They tend to be enthusiast owned, and so selling them to fellow enthusiasts makes it a limited market which might open up some bargaining opportunities. I know someone who found a desperate seller and blagged an 05 JDM STi for £8.5k

As above my mate just sold his black sti haweye 07 plate with 17,000 miles full subaru history totally standard and immaculate for only 11k , definately get the sti over wrx better brakes , 6 speed box larger turbo/injectors , you will want it remapped in the future so best to have everything in place ready , i picked up a 2002 sti prodrive style with 70,000 full subaru service history just had major service and scoobyclinic 320bhp pack fitted for £6000 last september the 320 bhp pack alone was £2000 he had all the receips there are bargains to be had prices have plummited and people have been made redundant and sadly can no longer afford to run them , good luck in your search.

A mapped 2.5 WRX will be a very nice road car, does depend on your use, higher mpg from a WRX too, if it matters !

I always found the 5sp WRX 'box much more drivable than the STi 6sp unit. With the extra power and shorter ratio's you are constantly changing gear in an STi, often needing the next cog mid-bend The 5sp ratio's with less poke suited my driving style better I think, but I suppose I would live with an STi 'box if I was to get another.

What about insurance, will that be an issue? Imports will be a lot more to insure.

Contrary to popular belief, they are often significantly cheaper to insure.

Not when I got some quotes of couple of months back they weren't. Quite a bit more.

Did you get quotes from A-Plan and Keith Michaels ? Most people I have known with JDM spec cars have paid IRO £500 for even modified STi's. UK owners always seem to be paying £600+.

Started looking at imports now as well. Will have to take the cost of insurance into account though for the sti. But if the price is right it would be worth it.

Just looking at WRX's mainly in the last fortnight and not one of the dealers/garages I have been to is offering more than about £150 to £200 off the sticker price.
I don't really think its much of a buyers market for WRX's at the moment. Offered 10200 cash on the spot for a WRX priced at 11K and the salesman wouldn't even negotiate. 11k or nothing. My mate who loves the haggling was shocked.
I'm thinking that the prices at the moment for the most part seem to be as low as they are going to go.

Anyway back to the hunt..

Thanks for all the help people. I have only just managed to find this thread again...

Got the WRX I initially made an offer on a couple of weeks after getting snubbed. Turned out the car's price had dropped by £500 within a week of me going in, so I offered less than the new asking price on the condition of getting 12 months road tax. The literally bit my hand off, had a phone call the next morning after making the offer online from the same salesman that wouldn't negotiate. He said his sales manager was happy with my offer and when could I come in for a test drive. You should have seen the salesmans face when he found out I was the same person that made him a better offer a couple of weeks previous.. Classic

Not sure but I think the fact I turned up scruffy looking he didn't take my first offer serious.

Anyway, loving the car. Drinks the fuel but don't really care as the car constantly makes me smile.

Insurance wasn't to bad either ( there's a story there for another time, but the little man won),

I bought my 2003 sti ppp a few months ago with 34,000 miles superb condition 9 G.
Whatever you get you are gona make it beta at least with the STI you can start further down the line if you know what i mean.Oh and good brakes to start.
Try to go sti.
