You will need a stand alone ECU such as Apexi, Simtek.
The Chip is for a V1/2

How much are you modding it?
My V3 Sti has a full decat and k&n and runs fine on the standard ECU.
Managed 326bhp @ 7,500 rpm on V Power with some NF Race in the tank.
No-one at the Subaru owners club RR day would believe it's standard'ish, it produced more power on the day than PPP'd blobeye's and V9 STi's.
Runs fine with just SUL and also doesn't even det with NUL - I think the older ecu's could adjust the timing a bit more.
If I was fitting a front mount/new turbo/new injectors I'd be looking at changing out the ecu.

yep u need a standalone ecu, apexi wud be good, i had mine tuned by mark at thwaites developments in warwick he changed everything over and remapped it, one injector was leaking so it was good knowing a specialist who does all aspects of work on the scooby was doing the job, no waiting around he fixed the leaky injector and got it out an mapped it, really good prices too

I might be wrong but i got told the apexi power fc with controller is rubbish on the impreza type r. I got told the simtec is the best one to go for??? But i would prefer the apexi. What prices are i looking at including mapping?

Well i wouldn't say Apexi is rubbush lol there's people pushing near 500BHP on them regardless of car type, majority of the skylines, supras, rx7's are running more than this. Who ever advised you obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.
I'll explain, With the APexi for the subaru you will retain the MAF and this can limit power output (i'm talking 450bhp ish), SIMETC is a good ecu and you can pay that lil extra to have the anti-lag and launch control (extra 150 i think), the SIMTEC us mafless and also has more facilities than the apexi but your will pay the extra for this.
There's plenty of ECU's out there and majority of them can be discussed with JGM. www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk (Simon) he's a very reputable mapper on here and very talented indeed. If i was you i would talk to him and discuss your requirements and power levels seeked. He will advise you what is what.
Good Luck
