If that doenst work for you then get some rook bars, they fit into the gutters.

Im looking at bike racks to... wont these mark the paintwork?? I prefer the idea of roof ones but cant see how they would fit, again worried about damaging the paintwork! Look forward to seeing what people come up with here...

I got a roof rack style bike rack. It's made by Thule. Can't remember which model but you need to get the correct length bars, the correct 'feet' and the correct attatchments for the feet. It wasn't cheap but came with a 12months warrenty.
There are loads of others such as Halfords own make which are probably just as good, but I was concerned about protecting the car and I didn't fancy watching my bike fly down the motorway so thought I'd get the best I could.
It doesn't damage the roof as long as you clean the feet and where they are going to sit on the roof.
Really easy to use, lockable and you can get the bike on/off really easy and quickly!

Loads of places sell the Thule stuff, just call them and tesll them the car you have and they can sort all the bits you need.
PS - Bike is really stable on the road, which is nice

i bought a wagon specifically to get my bike into- racks on a saloon are a pain- yr only option is roof and bars.
but don't fancy the noise, ditto bikes being insecure whilst yr away from the car
you can go tow bar route and mount onto there instead- like a lot of cabrio owners do.
