Default my53 wrx handling

how good is the handling of the standard car? I have one and throw it at corners etc... is it as good as say a new mondeo or a standard golf. sometimes under extreme driving the car behaves badly, but it's usually because i'm going flat out around certain bends. i only drive my car so I don't know what other cars handle like going around a roundabout at 40 mph.

Standard handling isn't very good, a fact masked by the massive traction available from AWD. View my 03 WRX in my garage to see my solution to the problem. In brief, even a cheap and simple swap of the rear ARB and drop links will reap dividends when allied with a good geo set-up. I used to do one roundabout near home at 80, all the way 'round it, not straight over. Uprated bars, AST's and RE070 tires combined to give astounding grip and composure. Just last week I got a chance to revisit my theories whilst driving a mates 06 STi (standard chassis, 330bhp) in the Yorkshire Dales, and even with 70bhp less, my old WRX would have raped it on all but the straight bits.

Car I had before i got my WRX in Feb 09 was a Volvo S60 T5. The WRX handles far far better than the T5 but in a straight line the T5 was quicker. I am working on changing that though. Soon. Very soon.

Thanks I will do. It's just sometimes you think things are not right and need a second opinion. I have driven a 350z with gt pack and that was amazing. Although it pains me to say it sometimes I prefer my wife's KA, just for the steering feel. The traction in the wet in the impreza is fantastic though!

Step 1. Whiteline ADJUSTABLE rear anti-roll bar and drop-links.

Kills understeer and allows oversteer on stiffest setting (22mm for a road car !)

Step 2. ALK & front ARB with poly bushed drop-links.

Increases front end grip again, and reduces the work done at the rear (20mm)

Step 3. Geometry - ask Corradoboy for a copy of his set-up, I did !

Step 4. STI struts & springs.... stiffer yet not too severe on the family.

P.S. I'm on step 6 now, toy car syndrome.

I think a smooth driver can go 24mm on the rear, no problem. Hooligans will kill themselves with it though. If I do get another Scoob I might even experiment with a 27mm

If you're taking of the OE springs and shocks, spend the extra and get some adjustable coilovers instead of conventional replacements. If you do, adjust them to suit where/how you're driving regularly. No point having adjustability and not using it IMHO.

Good man ! I enjoyed doing it in stages as the car got better, and better.

Step 1, is the best value mod on my car !

See cusco_kid on here (Geo) for decent prices.

P.S. Evening Dave !

Its a 53 WRX UK car and completely standard. Green air filter on its way and exhaust to be fitted on Saturday at Scooby Clinic in Chesterfield.
I want it to be at least as quick as the T5 in the short term but eventually want around 280bhp which will be considerably more powerful than anything I've had before. Doing it one thing at a time.

hi m8 dont bother with 27mm for road car its too aggressive for normal use ,it req racing slicks to get thebest from them and you need 24mm on the front Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to hard ok if you want to drift the car
22mm front 24mm rear is the best combo for confident drivers
cheers geo
