Angry What should i do??

Got a car last week, listened to engine and there was a little knocky noise. I heard a big end noise before and it didnt sound like that, so bought it..

Took it too the garage today for a check over... and they said that it was probably the big end..

They cannot diagnose it until the take everything apart. But all the signs seem to be pushing that way./.

Now i have no idea what to do.. Theres no point taking everything out to see if its the big end and not replace some of the internals..

What the hell do i do now ?

Dont see you got much choice.

Have it stripped, get it checked, probably find it's fecked so good time to have some stronger internals put in

Or, run it until it goes bang!

I know which I would rather do.

I wouldn't risk running it if it really sounds like big end failure. You might end up throwing a rod through the block and then it's going to cost even more to put right, unless you can get a good engine to transplant.

cheers guys.

well been looking at engine replacements.

I think, correct me if im wrong, but as long as i get a similar year and same plug ECU, i could swap the engine for a STI one.

But i have been told that i would have to use the mainfold from my original car to put on the STI one, otherwise i would have to do the whole wiring loom

Im just thinking of getting a new engine..

tbh i think thats what im gonna do. Only worry with that is: Why was it removed from the car? : What damage did the car have when engine was removed(ie:-front ended or on its roof). Was it serviced, was it thrashed? I dont know what to do.

been looking into it

and for mine, it will cost £850 for a replacement WRX engine, fitted and then fully serviced.. Think you get 3 months warranty on the engine aswel.

Been told it will take between 3-6 days though..

yes it is a slight worry, and if money was no object, then a rebuild i would have...(sounded like yoda then)

but money is tight.. im willing to gamble the money in the hope i get a good engine.. You can buy a replacement engine that has been fully rebuilt already for around 700 quid.. again it is serviced, but not fitted.

I quite fancy taking the chance of gettin a new engine instead of a rebuild. Im sick mate, really bad trouble with mine. I may get a replacement engine but u never know how many miles its done. Also, will deffo be investing in a re-map. Sick as **** aint the words at the moment mate. Shudda seen me standing at the side of the motorway at 4am this morning after it went pop.

i can imagine mate.. Im fairly lucky at the moment and mine hasnt gone pop.. I think i have caught it in the process of going. so will only be a matter of time..

Am getting some quotes over the next few days so will let you know what i find if you like, and vice versa please.

No you cant gurantee the mileage, but is cheaper than a re-build..
And if its under warranty, then it shouldnt be a problem.. I wouldnt buy an engine from any old tom.. would have to be from either someone i knew looked after their cars or a trader

The £850 option looks best value and makes most sense.

£850 ... where from?

Pikey Pete? If so the warranty may be an issue!

Why don't you strip it out yourself and spend an enjoyable week rebuilding it? It's not like it's complicated - it's a very, very, simple engine with simple parts.

I got no warning when my big end went, so i'd take it to a specialist & get them to have a look & tbh it's going to cost as much to take it apart to see if the big ends are going, as it is to just rebuild it!

Plenty of s/h engines turn up on here ...you even get the odd project rebuild

are you sure its big end? can you posta sound clip? mine knocks like a gooden in the morning till its warm. then its fine.
I would steer clear from any of the "recon" engines off ebay. There was a guy on here a few weeks back who brougt a supposed recon engine from a company on there. it was anything but. Their recon process consisted of spraying it of with a jet wash.
Replacement engines are good but only if you can find a reputable source and it seems non on ebay are.

well even if it isnt the big end, it requires a full strip down to figure out what it is.. so the easiest and cheapest option would be to just replace it.

Im very keen on getting a STI lump in it, but have to make sure it would work first.

Stevie,

If it is the big-end that,s gone and if you can afford it, i,d go forged now for sure, the only way to go imo mate.

Give David @ API a call, he,ll be there this morning...

if you ask me, buying another engine is a big risk. you could end up buying another bunch of problems.

Depends how good your are with engines Stevie, DON,T take this as an insult mate, but if you haven,t EVER built one, then i,d personally use a well known builder..

What budget do you have??

if i rebuilt the engine myself, then my budget would be bigger as the cost would be spead over a couple of months..

tbh i have never done an engine before. I have limited knowledge, but i am a quick learner and more than happy to have a go.. Whats the worst that can happen.. i blow the engine and need a transplant.. well thats me back to square one. But im confident i wouldnt

Well if i,d never built an engine before and i was spending money on FORGED internals etc, i think i,d be asking someone else to do it for me...That,s just me.

If you feel you have confidence in your own building, then give it a try, BUT if it goes belly up, you,ve then thrown away the money you,ve spen on the internals and you,re back where you started..

Only trying to help Stevie..

yes i appreciate it pete.

Just trying to work out whats the best option.

Been told i can put a V2 STI lump + ECU in mine and it will run fine. No other mods or swaps needed.. hmm tempted..

I can rebuild the old one while its out then
