The mobile phone in your car, cuts the radio when a call is recieved.

Supposing it cut the engine instead??????

If you are carjacked you call your mobile (which is hidden in the cashboard and always on charge?) and the car stops!! Result!!

I reckon it wouldnt take much, a black box of electronics and your everyday pay-as-you-go phone?

The phone is HIDDEN!!!! its simply used as a trigger, not as a real phone! - just thought, if you got a call as a wrong number the car would stop while YOU were driving it would need something like a code inputted in from your regular mobile?

I may look into making one - cant be too difficult?

Reckon there would be a market for them at, say, £299 each?

No monthly fee of course!!

If I recall correctly a similar device is already available. It's fitted to new Aston Martins for the last few years.

You get car-jacked and let them take the car. Then you call a number. What happens next is the immobiliser is triggered next time the car comes to a stop. To cut the engine immediately proves dangerous as you lose the power steering and the servo assistance on the brakes.

Thinking about it, Trackstar ought to be able to offer this service if they thought about it.

Think your insurance may not agree, especially if the bugger crashes it when it cuts out. (think that is why a lot of insurance companies don't like the blackjax system)

You just beat me to it mate ! I was just about to say how can he turn it off when he doesnt know its there. It on 'SILENT' mode. Personally I think its a hell of an idea. Another guy a while ago back came up with something similar, but rather than using his mobile to stop the car, he used it to track it. Both are excellent and lets face it, our cars are dissappearing everyday so something has to be done !

Erm... hold on, they already did 3 years ago (admittedly with monthly subscription for monitoring, but that includes recovery & replacement cars)

This system is in use already via satellite tracking and the mobile phone. The security company are contacted and they find where the car is through the tracking and then initiate the stop. The car is contacted and warning message is played to the occupants that the car's engine is going to immobilised in 30 seconds and they should stop the vehicle. Then the engine is immobilised if they stop or not, and the police are notified where to find the abandoned car. Just don't ask me who operates it all.

I know of two freely available GSM/GPS products that are configurable as to how you want them. ie they have I/O capabilities that can be connected up how you want. They are DIY but if you want to send an SMS to your car & tell it to lock all the doors & hoot the horn madly, then you can. Likewise, if go below 1 mph, shut engine off - then again NP.

You are also able to track your vehicle remotely yourself.

Initial cost is quite high & they have to be installed by someone (you?) but running costs can be low on a P&G SIM.

They are unlikely to be Thatcham Q approved though, so not too good for insurance purposes.

The only trouble with covert security measures, it would apear, is that the low life scum will attack you and steal your car, probably based on the assumption that you have not got such a sytem in place, and that your car does not have a tracking system fitted.

The system you suggest will help recover your car,(does it have a built in fire extinguishing system to put out the flames when they realise they have been stung , and proceed to torch it?), but will do nothing to protect the occupants of the car.

A recent thread on here mentioned a man and his girlfriend being dragged out of their car by FIVE attackers, on the way into Manchester, to steal the car!!

Mandatory fitment of a tracking device may be one avenue to pursue, perhaps with such a sytem as you describe also made mandatory.

If anyones interested, i was approached by a company selling a sms/gps device thats fits anywhere in your car. Amongst many of it features you can set it to send your phone a sms if it is moved from a designated area, if it is driven over a certain speed and at any time it can alert you to the cars exact location. I believe it can also be connected to your cars alarm/immobiliser that can be activated through sms. Also can measure journey times, top speed, 0-62mph speed etc. etc.

It costs £399 inc vat, theres no monthly contract or subscription. All you do is pay the cost of the sms the unit sends you.

Here's a thought. fit a secondary mirror, wear a white shirt with some shoulder stripes on it, an extra aerial and maybe the thieves may think you are an unmarked police car!.

I fitted my own bit of kit. Not going into too much detail, but when my car is moved by an unauthorised person I am alerted via my mobile. Meanwhile the car automatically locks all doors and control is taken away from the unauthorised driver. Through a rather clever bit of kit, I am then able to view the occupant of the car on my PC and also get an outside view. Then using a standard joystick redirect my scooby to the nearest police station or back home depending on the look of the offender.

Would you need to fit a phone? Surely a pager would do the same thing and it wouldnt need to be on constant charge, just the battery replaced every couple of months. Smaller too.
