In very simple terms -

A knock link detects det or knock from the engine.

This is when the air fuel mixture detonates before the spark - and causes engine failure

Some aftermarket ECUs use the check engine light to indicate knock/det

The knock link has a series of lights....if it shows red then det is occuring.
Time to ease off and get the car looked at.

It is advanced warning of big end failure if you like

Steve

Random Light Generator

Joking aside, it attempts to tell you if it detects knocking, which could also be a multitude of other things other than Pinking .......... the Knock Sensor provided by Subaru doesn't waste time lighting up a likkle LED - it speaks straight to the ECU and commands it to retard the ignition (many tims a second!) substitute it at your own risk.

Knocklinks are a simple piece of kit designed to give you warning of engine knocking/detting.

Quite old technology by todays standards though.

KS3 Knock Analyser is far more advanced and a very nice piece of kit:

KS-3 Knock Analyser - Knock Detection System. Complete Kit - Knock Sensor Included.
