Default WR1?

Merry Christmas to you all...
I am giving serious thought to buying a WR1 (I currently have a classic MY98 Turbo) and will probably drive one in the next few days when i find one close by to look at - but i have read some rather disappointing reviews (inc Top Gear) - is buying one going to be a mistake???
I was previously looking to get a 04 or 05 Sti with PPP, but had been swayed towards the WR1 by looks and colour...
Any thoughts...???
Thanks
Pilg

I'd get a JDM STi / Spec C instead of a WR1. Just my humble opinion

Trust the reviews, unless you have a reason not to?

I suggest you would be a lot happier with a JDM STi.

Thanks guys - think i need to do some more research.
I find my Scoob understeers towards the limits which is in no small part due to my cheap tyres but can the WR1 be set up to not understeer so much? There is the diff switch which i will be very new and "green" to.

How much are JDM Sti's at the moment? - must confess i know nothing about them.
WR1 appealed due to cheap-ish tax and price/ rarity ratio...

I wanted to stick to UK models which i presume will make servicing, insurance etc simpler.

Makes no odds these days fella Insurance is as cheap if not cheaper (A Plan or K Michaels) & any specialist can do the servicing.

Some on here prefer the UK car over the JDM of course

Your choice as said above though try driving a wr1 and a jdm sti and make your own mind up.

The wr1 comes 25mm lower on prodrive suspension and the dccd from the 2005 model.

JDM STi are a bit more "raw and focused" than UK cars and a better specced. As said servicing is not an issue. As far as insurance goes there is not much difference.

Didn't Jeremy Clarkson say the WR1 was the ultimate getaway car? (That's what I remember anyway) Why is that disappointing?

They actually said it was a good boys car, and the Evo 8 fq320 was a mans car when they put them up against each other.

Get a regular 05 STi with mods and some cash in the back pocket, or if keeping it standard, get a Spec C / JDM. WR1 is overrated IMO. Plus it's a girlie colour.

> Service interval on the WR1 is 5k or 6 months

A little bit of truth stated in a very misleading way. The service interval is exactly the same as all STi's at 10,000 miles but with an additional oil change slotted in at 5,000 miles (but not 6 months) between the normal services. The oil change costs £100 or so at main stealer prices but thats hardly the same as halving the interval on the main £300 services is it?

> The WR1 is slower than the old STI put the same bhp in the STI and STI

That's just bollocks. The STi was 285bhp and PPP'd up to 305ps (I think 302 bhp). The WR1 was 320ps (316bhp) as standard. How can the STi be quicker? I've owned both and the WR1 is a lot quicker to drive, awesome performance and feels a lot quicker than an equivalent PPP'd STi. Prodrive had a 0-60 time of 4.2 secs for the WR1 and, while no other testers got near to this, comparing like with like it compared very favourably with their figures for the PPP'd STi of the time.

I can understand some people not liking the WR1's colour (but personally I do like it) but don't understand why people continue to slag it off in this way. It's an awesome machine. Not driven a later 2.5 litre or a JDM car so can't compare it to one of them but if I was looking for an 04 STi and a WR1 came up I'd bite their hand off.

top gea track time was 1.26ish, i also like the WR1 but deff pants on track, but on real roads not driven so dont no. Just going on other peeps or tv stats

We take it you're a fan of the WR1. Other than the colour, people are not slagging them off, they are merely pointing out that a JDM car is a better one in their opinion.
But we agree the WR1 needs a service every 5k, at just £100 in your case

Ok - now started looking at what i orginally wanted anyway - 04/05 sti with ppp.
Still have the WR1 on short list but haven't driven one yet...
Don't know why but an import just doesn't appeal...

Drive one yourself, it's the only way to decide.

I bought my 2002 STI without being able to try one, as they didn't have any built and finished in the country ! I got lucky and still have it.

Whiteline adjustable rear ARB will cure any understeer and make you a happier chappie.

I own a WR1 and went from a Bugeye.......night and day mate, One thing I dont find it doing is understeer, in fact it quite tail happy, it has alot to do with the DCCD tho, I bought it because of the colour and that there is only 500 of them, Im a bit bored of normal blue coloured scoobs with gold wheels

Just joking lads

If you can mate, try and drive your option cars then that should make your mind up for you

Oh and good luck

I have driven a lot of Scoobs - had an STi V for six years, drove the first of the non-blobby new ages (can't remember which year) including drag racing it (slow and heavy.

I like the WR1 and would have bought one. It was a good mix of power and comfort. Instead I bought a 911

Now I have a MY06 (Hawkeye) Spec C and it is a lot more raw than the WR1 however it does do something that you are looking for - compared to any standard Scoob (UK or JDM) the most recent Spec Cs have the pointiest front-ends. Even Don Palmer was surprised when he drove my car at Brunters. It is very resistant to understeer for a Scoob - almost Evo like I dare to say, especially with the diff open. and it is wet. Fantastic!

You can get a Hawkeye Spec C for good money now - I was offered £20k for mine eight months ago and now as a private sale I would hate to think what I would get!
