It always used to be 10% import tax plus VAT. Has that changed now?

Your local library will have a massive (several volumes) tome called 'The Tariff'. In here you will find every applicable rate of duty for every type of goods, from every country.

For a camera for example, looking at Commodity | Business Link
does that mean that total tax is 4.2% (3rd country duty) + 17.5% (VAT standard rate) ?

I've just imported a 2.5 bottom end and ACT clutch plus flywheel imported and didn't pay have to pay any tax/vat on top.

Also, they where still insured for the full replacement value which was clearly marked on the pallet it arrived on!

just ask your supplier to mark it as a "warranty replacement".
