race altered/rally altered - same thing. Is it just a badged RA or the real thing and an STi RA or a WRX RA?

The RA acronym has more or less had it's meaning changed over the years. Initially, it stood for "Record Attempt", as Subaru of Japan used the Nurburgring to set a new lap record for the Impreza WRX STi. A more recent example can be seen on the 2005MY WRX STI Spec C Type RA, the usage of "Record Attempt" is apparent. However, not every revision of the Type RA has been used on the Nurburgring. Currently, it is marketting that decides what "RA" means. Here is a response from Subaru of Japan (the makers and sellers of the Impreza WRX STi Type RA and Spec C Type RA) sent on 11/10/2006:

スバルインプレッサTYPE RA－Rの「RA」の意味は、 Rがレーシング、AがグループAという意味を持っています。

It translates to R = Racing, A = Group A for the WRC class the WRC Impreza competes in. The car Subaru of Japan is referring to is the 2007MY WRX STI Spec C Type RA-R.
To date, the official names that have been used are "Record Attempt" and "R = Racing, A = Group A".

with respect to the OP - do you not know what model Impreza you've actually bought as you appear not to know what the RA badge signifies?
The RA stands for Race Altered (as has been pointed out already).
Of course someone could have stuck the sticker on the rear without the car actually being an RA model type.
Maybe this is a wind up, if not it beggars belief?

On the classic models it is indeed Race Altered.
When it came to the Newage cars Subaru gave the 'spec' a commercial name with Spec C (Specification Competition). A Spec C is an 'RA' specification car.
With the Ltd Ed 'Spec C Type-RA' model 'RA' stood for 'Record Attempt' in recognition of the sub 8 min Nurburging Lap, with the car gaining some nice STI uprated suspension goodies.
With the later Spec C Type RA-R, it stood for 'Record Attempt - Radical'.
Both are fantastic cars to drive, but the RA-R just edges it.
