Headers or not??? for my spec D
Hi this is where I'm at!
Subaru warranty runs out in March and I want to do a few mods after that.
I like the look of the sport cat down pipe by Cobra. It replaces both cats with one sport cat (stainless) for £215.00. I think that's real cheap and looks to be good quality. Was then thinking of a remap by Jolly Green Monster, already have a K&n filter and a Prodrive back box, so I was thinking BHP to be around 320!!.
I dont think I will be spending a lot more on engine mods after that till a mate of mine recommended that I get the headers changed befor my remap. I looked on Ebay and found a good looking set for £220 which is in my price range. Was just after a bit of advice, is this the right way forward?????

Be carefull with those cheap ones,, i had one with flexy thing... wich colapsed after 200 miles.... U need headers only if u going 400+ bhp... Get ported ones instead,, Harvey is the man to contact ,,, you'll do the exchange for about 200 quid, giving your ones to him and he'll give u ported ones with matched and wrapped uppipe.... faster turbo spool etc... Contact Harvey

Looks cool just to much money for me
I like the sound of the ported headers, just don't know if its is worth spending to much money on the headers if I can achieve 320 BHP with a sport cat and remap

Stop worrying about numbers, and think about how you want it to drive!

I'm not worried about BHP numbers, I'm worried about money
With replacing both the cats with one sports cat and remap seams to me the best value for money mod, and I was after info from you guys weather headers would be worth doing at the same time or not ??

to be honest mate i would'nt bother unless you are going for 400 plus!
ye the spool up is better, but not a big differance
Also you can lose the subaru burbble, depending on which headers you choose.

would not bother with headers like stated above. Just get exhaust - decat downpipe and remap. would not even bother with filter - they are all the same. You will get 320 with that - enjoy
Had tubular header on my impreza - not good unless over 350-400 bhp and with big turbos.

The cheap sports cats may be 100 or 200 cell per inch, but a small cross sectional area, meaning less flow, and less ponies.
Cheers, Nick

Nick i was under the impression that the Prodrive sport cat was only good for the 2001-2005 models??
Most of the advertised exhausts are as above never seems to be many for the 2006 2.5 litre

320 bhp... you could achieve that with just a remap and no mods mate.
I have a decat downpipe that replaces both cats, a filter, fuel pump (not really necessary sub 400bhp) and some better spark plugs. With a remap my car made 360bhp/390LbFt. The latter is the most important number, especially on our cars with the 2.5ltr engine, as it will really make a difference to the performance. I now have power just about every where and don't need to change down half as much as I needed to as standard. There is literally no lag with the VF43 turbo and the 2.5ltr engine.

Is the VF43 the standard Turbo for our car?
What plugs are you using?
that sure is very impressive,i have read on here of people spending a lot of money to achieve figures like that

I forget the exact number of the plugs but they are NGK 7 something or other (I'm not mechanical and get experts to select and fit these things for me ).
It is not even an aggressive map to get that figure. I know a few lads who have seen slightly more.
You would spend a lot to get those figures on a 2ltr but don't forget you have a 2.5ltr engine. Costs involved for me:
Plugs £40
Fuel pump (optional sub 400bhp) £80
Filter Free with exhaust but usually set you back around £30
Magnex decat downpipe £200 (this was price new but you could prolly get cheaper second hand). Expect to pay £2-400 for a sports cat.
Remap - group buy with Andy F around £550.
I also bought a deresonated centre pipe and racebox back box for £350ish but this is not needed if you are happy with standard. More aesthetic/noise than performance.
Add fitting costs if you can't do it yourself/don't know anyone competent.
