OK need some help here.

Was keen to have 17" wheels on my classic as on my original classics (owned many moons ago) this is the wheel size I had and I have read that 18s compromise the ride and affect the handling.

Trouble is I have Brembo brakes to go on to the car from an STI8 and this limts my wheel choices. I ordered some Rota SDRs (17s) but they are now discontinued and I am not really liking any of the alternatives.

I fancy some Inovit Redlines but the 17s won't work with the Brembos, the 18s however will.

So my question is do 18s work on a classic. Not talking about looks, but in terms of ride and handling.

Car has AGX adjustables and H&R springs so is 50mm lowered. Don't wnat any rubbing or stuff like that and not interested in spacers etc.

So over to you.

 

You will get rubbing 100% at that ride height especailly hard cornering mate ..

 

You mean with 18s, yes?

 

Mine only rubs with people in the back seat. As for ride comfort and handling i dont find much difference to the 17's

 

Cheers. I am curious as to why it rubs at all though. Is the wheel wider than a 17 or is the tyre/wheel combination of a larger diameter than that for a 17?

What size tyres are you guys using on the 18s?

I have 18s on mine with no rubbing. Having said that I have had my arches rolled.

My wheels are 18x7.5 ET45mm with 225/35 tyres.

Also, having my geometry set up made more clearance to the arches. I'm running 1.5 degrees camber at the front and 1 degree on the rear.

I had 18's on mine, but the tyres were crap and were also rubbing on the back arches (going over bridges, lumpy roundabouts and hard corners).
Tyre size was 225/35 on mine.

I changed over to some normal 16" STI's and blizzarks, at least while it's not good weather.

 

I've got 215/35's on mine.

 

Thanks people. I am still undecided, but do not like the sound of the wheels rubbing.

Still got the original 16" wheels on at the moment and stuck until I can sort the wheels out as the Brembos are sitting there waiting to go on but can't until they will actually fit under the rims.

Any more info very welcome.

 

On my old MY99 UK turbo, the previous owner (Paul) had it lowered 25mm I thinkon Eibach springs. It was also running 18 inch P1 alloys with 225 tyres and I never experienced any rubbing, however, it maybe a little different with a 50mm drop.

About a year after I bought the car, I swapped to 17's which did make the handling a little more predictable, but there certainly wasn't a massive difference.

Here it is with the 18's.
