A friend of mine has more or less bought an L reg Turbo import, good condition drives well etc for £6400. Seems OK to me but only got into these cars 5 mths ago so not an expert. Anyway my question is that log book has GL on it and not WRX, but I thought GL had no turbo and this one has all the right bits. Engine wise it looks the same as last WRX we looked at (did not look at log book, so can't compare) so assume everything OK and that this is normal for log book to say this or is it a mistake.
Opinions please on whether this is the case.

Thanks Terry

Thumbs up

Terry, my mate had one the same age with GL on the logbook and it went through the HPI check ok and his dad had an EVO 4 and that also had GL on the logbook and that was fine. The early personal imports seem to have come in as the lower spec models as the DVLA did not have the correct info on the system so they used the nearest model to them. I might be wrong on some of the info but that is what I understand was the case.

I always thought the GL was the 2 litre not the turbo. Does the log book vin, the engine vin and the car vin all match. Then get it HPI checked and they should tell you the exact make.

All the the numbers on my mates car matched up and it even told us the engine type which was an EJ20 which I belive was only fitted to the early Impreza Turbos and it still came back as a GL but all was ok when it came to sell.

yeh I thought these were extreemly rare?

"1.8GL"
A very special special! In 1993 Subaru UK brought in 6 Impreza WRX RSs, the development car which led to the RA. Due to type approval regulations, the cars were registered as 1.8GLs! 3 went to Prodrive and were presumably smashed to bits in a forest, while 3 went to Subaru UK who later sold them as used cars. At least one is known still to exist. Yes, it says 1.8GL on the registration document. Yes, it has a 2 litre engine with a huge turbo under the bonnet ...
http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm

but if it says 2litre on the log book then I'm wrong as said b4 though if the vin's match I dont think theres too much to worry about.. how many owners were in the uk?

Have a look at the SIDC FAQ under "1.8GL"
http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm#1.3

Maybe it's one of these

Two other questions,
1/ what does he do about insurance tell them it's a GL or WRX?
2/ Get log book changed or leave as it is

Sorry if silly question, as I guess you just insure as per log book clasification, or maybe not?

WOW you guys are too fast for me to respond in right order. (but that's what makes this bbs the best)
Anyway did look at SIDC site first and not one of them (SHAME) and it does say 2 litre on log book. So if numbers match then we have gained another Impreza owner from the BMW fan club!!
Terry
PS no owners in UK

Are you talking about a log book or the V5 form from the DVLA.

If you are talking about the V5 form then when my STi was registered in the UK the DVLA put it down as a GL but after 3 letters they have managed to change it to an RB5
I can't be ar$ed to try and change it again.

If you mean't a log book then, apologies... I'll get my coat

It was V5 form. I thought that was just called a log book but guess not, now you see why I asked you lot (little information and all that). Idiots question I know, but what is the difference.

only thing I'd be worried about is the no uk owners ... but then I bought a UK not an import anyway . You would have to declare it as a WRX otherwise you'd be in big trouble... the DVLA may be stupid but the insurance companies will riggle out of anything they can (+ the police arn't that stupid either )

Insurance company needs to have it right, definitely. Worth sending the V5 back to the DVLA with a letter explaining what's wrong.

Believe it or not, my car (MY00 EU import) is registered as a Sabaru Impreza! How daft is that?

Quite a few earlier imported cars from outside of the EU were registered as GLs by the DVLA as they didn't know what they were and put down the nearest...

Mine is a GL. Funny when doing an online quote for insurance. It comes up as a 1.6l 2wd. It is an STi 2. Japan lists them as GL if they have the full package. Power / aircon, etc... It is a Japanese market tag. Not the same as a UK GL. Like GTi or Lux etc... on a car over here. Tell the insurance it is a WRX 4wd turbo or you will be sorry. You can change the listing with the DVLA.
