Credit Crunch who (specialist) should do best (edited due to flame fest)
Having been to a few 'specialist' and without going into great detail I have seen a few threads of people not so happy with the service they get. Expensive, customer service?, poor mapping, etc.
With the recession set to bite even harder next year (from about February onwards if predictions are correct) does the traditional specialist have the 'right' to survive? If you had a choice of only one of the specialists to survive who would it be and why?
I'm finding it much better to just get a good local reputable mechanic to fit the standard items as it's much cheaper and if you are after a remap, it's best to go with the individual specialists like Andy F, Bob R or the JGM.
If your car is over 400bhp and pushing for more why not consider mapping yourself.... Get the many books first and read a while, then get onto the EFi101 course to advance level (with hands-on practical tuning), book a local dyno and if you have a custom ECU as well just get the software and tools and tweak away..... (once you've had the lessons, etc)
So vote and lets see who is coming out on top.....

specialists
i think there will allways be a call for specialists, maybe they will have tighten their belts like the rest of us, maybe even lower their prices to tempt people in to their workshops and or special offers?

'The racing Line' as there aren't any other decent tuners in the vast expanse of Yorkshire, especially for Evo's.
As far as I'm aware IGB Group, Magnex and RC Developments have bitten the bullet so far.

This thread is dumb.
I've dealt with three of the companies on your list, and all of them have their strengths and all 'deserve' to survive.
But how can I vote for three when the choice is only for one, or by omission of a positive vote, neg companies I have no experience of?

They all make VAST profits.... so should all survive a lean spell !
Seriously, it's bad management that will kill any company, not a quiet spell.
I hope that the economic down-turn will reduce the queues for quality engineering work.... yes I do want an up-rated motor !

The others were not used them because of their "Location" and not because they were "rubbish" , "worse" or "Dearer"
IMHO IIRC

This is what forum's are all about lots of heated debate. If you haven't gathered this (some have) it's to see which specialist is rated the best rather than the wishy/washy I love em all.
No company has a right to survive and those that do deserve to, (I hope) simple. If a company is good, I would not wish it to go out of business at all but if it isn't should it stay in business?
It's very simple why get so worked up? If you read my thread I'm saying none have the 'right' to survive and if you had to choose one, which one? What this should be doing is letting you think "Hmmm which do I think is the best?..

I have read threads of people complaining about a couple of specialists in particular and I 'would' wish for any restaurant that gives people food poisoning to go under, people that sell toys that are dangerous to kids to go under and any car specialist that keeps on giving poor service to customers to go under.

Please politely re-read the question and ask yourself did the OP wish that any go out of business?
Next, two companies Zen and RCM seem to be standing out above the rest. Some are averaging and others (although they have had a lot of customers) don't appear to get as many votes.

I hope all of these guys make it through. The recession is tough and all these people are trying to make a living, which is fair enough. I'm more than happy to pay for informed expertise.

From my dealings with David at API so far, they're most certainly one of the best outfits out there.

Maybe the likes of Andy Forrest, Bob Rawle, JGM, Subaru 4 u, and dare I say Lateral, just to name a few, should just pack up now !
It's a stupid, ill thought out thread, that does more harm than good.
Mark.
