Default Handheld speed camera

I think I may have been caught on a handheld speed camera today by a police man at the side of the road. I was doing about 60mph (maybee even closer to 58!!) on a road where the speed limit is 50mph.

Firstly, I was wondering how strict they are with sending out tickets? But also, I was wondering why there was no police car or motorbike to pull me, or anyone else for that matter, over a bit further up the road. The policeman was standing on his own with a handhald camera (no tripod), do these sorts of devices also record your number plate or are they usually reliant on police pulling you over.

After twelve years of driving, these could be my first ever points, how much would they affect my insurance premium?

Thanks for your help.

Are you sure that it was a laser? The reason that I ask is that if they arent on a tripod then the unavoidable vibration will lead to inaccuracy.....

Not really sure what type of speed detector he was holding (laser, radar, etc), but it was definitely handheld and not on a tripod. And he was definitely on his own without a car or any other equipment.

Not 100%, but I think they usually stop you there and then. If your speedo said 58, it was probably only 55, so may have been within allowable limit.

(Could be wrong, of course.)

Id certainly expect to be stopped at the time by a traffic police officer.

When I've seen the hand held ones, they pull you there and then.

But if you were to get points, I wouldn't worry, it didnt affect me with Direct Line. Dont think 3 points does affect you now-a-days.

Cool

hi m8,

i didnt know this untill a month or so ago,but in some areas they have local communitys who kinda servay areas for speed, and can even have a officer there for the use of a accurate speed lazer. however if this is the case, you WONT be prosacuted with speeding as its only a servay.

i know this as i was in a "friends" car about 4 weeks ago,and was doing close to 45/50 in a 30 area. he told me they offten do this and has been "zapped" many of times!!

hope this helps
